About The Position

The City of San Bernardino is seeking an experienced Equipment Mechanic II to perform advanced maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment. This journey-level position performs advanced diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on a diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid, and CNG-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.
  • Three to four (3-4) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles or construction equipment or 12-24 months experience as an Equipment Mechanic I for the City; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A State of California driver’s license.
  • A valid Class "B" California Driver's License with appropriate Passenger and/or Tank and/or Hazmat endorsement(s).
  • Three current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in any combination (truck and/or automotive) required prior to advancement to Equipment Mechanic II.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records.

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, electric/hybrid and CNG-powered automotive, and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to work.
  • Basic use and operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials in shop and field settings, including welding properties of various metals and alloys.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics.
  • Knowledge of lubrication systems, including oil and greases used in servicing and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and clean air requirements.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing gasoline, diesel and CNG-powered automotive, construction and specialized equipment.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment.
  • Skill in estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Skill in exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
  • Skill in preparing basic records and reports in the fleet CMMS.
  • Skill in using shop mathematics to make calculations.
  • Skill in fabricating and repairing a wide variety of metal parts, equipment, and tools.
  • Skill in following and applying safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Skill in reading, understanding, and applying technical manuals, schematic diagrams, specifications and parts lists.
  • Skill in understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating a computer and common office equipment.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Skill in providing customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Heavy Duty Truck Technician Certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing construction equipment and specialized fleet vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on a diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, electric, hybrid, and CNG-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical issues on vehicles.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on heavy construction equipment.
  • Rebuild major engine components.
  • Repair hydraulic brake systems.
  • Troubleshoot emergency warning and communication systems.
  • Use specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Complete repairs on a variety of City vehicles.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Ensure the City's fleet remains safe, operational, and ready to serve the community.
  • Lead the work of helpers.
