About The Position

At the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), the appearance, safety, and functionality of our campus depend on reliable equipment and skilled professionals who keep it operating at its best. From maintaining athletic fields and landscapes to supporting snow removal and campus events, our equipment fleet plays a critical role in the university's daily operations. We are seeking a skilled, motivated, and solution-oriented Equipment Mechanic I to join our Facilities Management team. This position serves as UNC's primary equipment maintenance professional, responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and managing a diverse fleet of grounds maintenance equipment, utility vehicles, small engines, and specialized machinery. This is more than a mechanic position. It is an opportunity to directly support the student experience, campus operations, athletic facilities, and university events by ensuring the equipment our teams rely on is safe, dependable, and ready for service year-round.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position OR a combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to one (1) year
  • Valid Driver's License with good driving record

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining grounds, landscape, agricultural, municipal, or commercial equipment
  • Experience with hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine diagnostics and repair
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience using technical manuals, schematics, and computerized diagnostic tools
  • Technical training, industry certifications, or coursework related to mechanical systems, equipment maintenance, automotive technology, diesel technology, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair gas, diesel, and small-engine equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, ignition, transmission, and fuel-system issues
  • Perform preventive maintenance services including inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, adjustments, and component replacement
  • Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications
  • Maintain equipment maintenance records, inventory systems, and repair documentation
  • Coordinate and track vendor repairs, parts procurement, and equipment service history
  • Manage shop organization, tool accountability, and safe work practices
  • Conduct equipment safety inspections and determine when equipment should be removed from service
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and component modification when practical and cost-effective
  • Track maintenance costs and assist with equipment replacement planning
  • Support equipment operators through training, coaching, and technical guidance
  • Maintain chainsaws, mowers, hand tools, and other specialized equipment
  • Assist with snow removal preparation, equipment readiness, and emergency response operations
  • Support special events, facility projects, and seasonal campus operations
