About The Position

The City of Kingman is seeking an experienced Equipment Mechanic to join their Fleet Division within Public Works. This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse range of City vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, garbage trucks, buses, police vehicles, mowers, and heavy equipment. The primary goal is to ensure the fleet remains safe and operational for City services. Key duties include diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative maintenance, completing repairs, and verifying that all vehicles and equipment adhere to safety and regulatory standards. This position reports to a supervisor and does not involve managing other employees. The ideal candidate is adept at hands-on work, enjoys problem-solving, prioritizes safety, and excels at keeping essential equipment functioning. Strong communication, organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy shop environment are essential, along with a customer-service focus. The role requires the employee to provide their own set of hand tools.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by some trade school certificate or specialized training related to automotive and diesel mechanics.
  • Five (5) years of related experience.
  • Any combination of experience and training demonstrating the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
  • Valid Arizona Driver License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • CDL endorsement required or ability to obtain within 6 months (for Public Works assignment).
  • Motorcycle Operator License may be required depending on assignment.
  • Must provide own hand tools.
  • Additional technical certifications may be required based on assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications are preferred and may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Repair & Maintain Fleet Vehicles (50%): Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including engines, electrical systems, brakes, hydraulics, and A/C units. The fleet includes fire apparatus, garbage trucks, pickups, sedans, and other light-duty vehicles.
  • Preventative Maintenance & Safety Checks (30%): Performing routine servicing, safety inspections, and preventative maintenance to ensure vehicle reliability, minimize downtime, and meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Support & Customer Service (10%): Completing work orders, assisting with emergency field repairs, supporting other divisions, transporting equipment, and providing professional customer service to drivers and coworkers.
  • Shop Safety & Compliance (10%): Keeping the shop organized and safe, handling hazardous materials properly, maintaining SDS documentation, and adhering to all safety and environmental regulations.
