About The Position

The California Rural Indian Health Board, Inc. is seeking an Epidemiologist for the California Tribal Epidemiology Center (the “EpiCenter”). This role involves engaging in epidemiologic activities, producing analysis of health statistics, and preparing and disseminating health reports. The position requires developing project methodology, collecting and managing epidemiological data from various health programs and agencies, and performing data analysis using statistical and spreadsheet programs. The Epidemiologist will interpret analyses, write analytical sections of reports, develop data collection instruments, and produce both lay and technical reports. This role also includes coordinating projects, developing work scopes and schedules, assisting with grant writing and budget development, and serving as a professional consultant. Communication with Indian health care providers and the Indian community regarding data and analytical issues is crucial, as is ensuring the accuracy and clarity of analytical information. The position also involves monitoring funded program activities and special projects. Additional responsibilities include maintaining a valid driver’s license, potentially driving agency vehicles for up to seven hours a day, and occasional overnight travel within the service area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is the minimum educational requirement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Communications, English, Health Sciences, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience, including three (3) years directly related to the program area (e.g., grant writing, health research, technical writing, or data coordination).
  • In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, applicants must have four (4) additional years of relevant professional experience (total of nine (9) years), including at least three (3) years in a related field.
  • Experience conducting research literature reviews and working with statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA).
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, including the ability to produce well-organized and informative narratives of analytical methods (writing sample may be requested).
  • Advanced presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to conduct research literature reviews.
  • Must have advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in various computer programs, including MS Office Suite, Office 365, and statistical software (i.e., SAS, SPSS, STATA), etc.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Experience in time management and meeting deadlines.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and American Indian self-determination.
  • An awareness and a profound respect for American Indian / Alaska Native traditions, customs, and socioeconomic contexts.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Communications, or a related field is preferred.
  • In lieu of a master’s degree, applicants must have two (2) additional years of progressively responsible experience beyond the bachelor’s baseline, including supervisory, project lead, or advanced technical responsibilities.
  • Experience with Tribal health systems, nonprofit organizations, evaluation, or the public sector preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops project methodology and determines research design.
  • Collects epidemiological electronic data files from Indian health programs and state health agencies.
  • Stores and manages the collected data.
  • Generates analysis plans.
  • Performs analyses, including data linkages with statistical and spreadsheet programs; interprets analyses and writes analytical sections of study reports.
  • Develop data collection instruments and collect health surveillance.
  • Produces both lay and technical reports to present health data.
  • Serves as a coordinator for one or more projects.
  • Develops work scopes and schedules for special projects.
  • Assists in writing complex contracts or grants as needed.
  • Assists in designing and developing simple and complex grant budgets and justifications as needed.
  • Serves as a professional consultant to various organizations and committees.
  • Communicates with Indian health care providers and the Indian community about data and analytical issues.
  • Ensures the accuracy and clarity of analytical information in the EpiCenter.
  • Monitors specifically funded program activities and special projects, as assigned.
  • Maintains a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and ability to be insurable under CRIHB’s automobile insurance.
  • Ability to drive up to seven (7) hours a day.
  • Occasional overnight travel within CRIHB’s service area may be required.

Benefits
