About The Position

Under the guidance of the Project Manager, the Environmental Technician will provide hands-on support for the client’s (NASA Glenn Research Center) regulated and hazardous waste management program. The Hazardous Waste Technician will support the collection, handling, characterization, packaging, labeling, transportation, storage, inspection, and shipment of hazardous and other regulated wastes while ensuring activities are performed in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, NASA requirements, and Center policies and procedures. The position will support environmental operations at both Lewis Field and the Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility (GRC-ATF).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Up to two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience supporting hazardous waste, regulated waste, hazardous materials, environmental field activities, industrial operations, chemical handling, or a closely related function.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous waste and hazardous materials handling practices.
  • Ability to understand and follow applicable environmental, health, and safety procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to accurately complete and maintain waste management records, inspection documentation, and associated regulatory paperwork.
  • Ability to use computers and electronic systems for recordkeeping, data entry, and waste tracking.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and communicate potential safety or environmental compliance concerns.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with environmental professionals, operations personnel, waste generators, contractors, and Government personnel.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required NASA facility access.
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Hazardous Waste Management training.
  • DOT Hazardous Materials (Ground Shipper) training.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Ability to maintain applicable refresher training and certifications as required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and pick up hazardous waste, universal waste, other regulated waste, PCB waste, used oil waste, asbestos-containing material waste, medical waste, and other applicable waste streams from generator locations.
  • Transport regulated waste to designated on-site Central Accumulation Areas (CAAs) at GRC locations.
  • Label, mark, package, bulk, lab pack, consolidate, and otherwise prepare regulated waste for storage and disposal in accordance with federal and state regulations and Center procedures.
  • Conduct inspections of hazardous and regulated waste accumulation locations, including Central Accumulation Areas (CAAs), Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs), and universal waste collection points.
  • Conduct required waste sampling and assist with coordination of laboratory analysis using approved sampling methods and procedures.
  • Support spill response activities, including containment, containerization, cleanup, sampling, waste handling, and disposal activities, as assigned.
  • Maintain waste containers, labels, spill response supplies, PPE, tools, and other materials necessary to safely perform assigned duties.
  • Maintain required environmental, hazardous waste, hazardous materials transportation, and safety training and certifications.
  • Assist the GRC Site Lead/Waste Program Manager with the coordination and preparation of regulated waste shipments to permitted Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) or other appropriate receiving facilities.
  • Assist the GRC Site Lead/Waste Program Manager with identifying and documenting potential waste management deficiencies and communicating issues requiring corrective action to appropriate environmental personnel.
  • Assist the GRC Site Lead/Waste Program Manager with preparing and maintaining waste management documentation, including waste profiles, characterization documentation, manifests, shipping documents, Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) forms, inspection records, and other required records.
  • Assist the GRC Site Lead/Waste Program Manager with entering and maintaining waste generation, characterization, sampling, pickup, and disposal information in the Government-provided systems, such as Hazardous Material Management System (HMMS) and/or other applicable tracking systems.
  • Assist the GRC Site Lead/Waste Program Manager with tracking waste shipments and returned manifests/shipping documents and communicate missing, incomplete, or potentially inaccurate documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Support environmental compliance inspections, audits, investigations, and regulatory site visits by providing field assistance, records, and documentation as requested.
  • Assist with hazardous waste generator training and other waste management outreach activities as directed.
  • Travel between Lewis Field and the Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility as necessary to support waste management activities.
  • Provide support to other areas of the contract as required.
  • Provide support to other HSG customers and projects when requested.
  • Ensure all work performed is conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements, applicable performance work statements, health and safety plans, job hazard analyses, and approved standard operating procedures.
