About The Position

The Environmental Technician performs a variety of duties related to hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, and pollution control. This role involves preparing hazardous wastes for storage, shipment, and disposal, utilizing a hazardous material inventory system, and conducting environmental compliance inspections. The technician will also perform warehousing duties for hazardous materials and waste, operate a forklift to move containers, and serve as a member of the Emergency Spill Response Team, responding to and cleaning up spills. Additionally, the role includes conducting field investigations and laboratory tests to gather data on pollutants in air, water, and soil, and maintaining monitoring equipment. The position may involve specialization in specific areas of environmental pollution control.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.
  • Must possess a current HAZMAT certification and a 40 hour Hazwopper certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance for access to the Depot Production Computer System.
  • Must be willing to follow all established safety rules and protocols.
  • Must work in a safe manner to protect not only themselves, but the other workers around them.
  • May be required to wear specific PPE (personal protective equipment) items dependent on specific job duties and safety policies.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
  • May be required to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Must be able to pass Rapid Gate if required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • Access to the Depot requires all covered individuals to be registered with the United States Selective Service.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares hazardous wastes for storage, shipment and disposal.
  • Utilizes the Hazardous Material Inventory Disposal System (HMIDS) computer program to track and monitor hazardous material and waste on depot.
  • Conducts environmental compliance inspections.
  • Performs warehousing duties involving one or more warehousing specializations related to receipt, temporary storage, handling, maintenance, and turn-in of depot hazardous waste and materials.
  • Operates a gasoline or electric powered forklift truck capable of lifting loads weighing less than 10,000 pounds and as high as 168 inches to move hazardous materials and waste containers.
  • Serve as a member of the Depot's Emergency Spill Response Team. Required to immediately respond to notifications of HM/HW spills and take action to contain and clean-up the spills.
  • Conducts tests and field investigations to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering and scientific personnel in determining sources and methods of controlling pollutants in air, water, and soil, utilizing knowledge of agriculture, chemistry, meteorology, and engineering principles and applied technologies.
  • Conducts chemical and physical laboratory and field tests according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances, using pH meter, chemicals, autoclaves, centrifuge spectrophotometer, microscope, analytical instrumentation, and chemical laboratory equipment.
  • Collects samples of gases from smokestacks, and collects other air samples and meteorological data to assist in evaluation of atmospheric pollutants; collects water samples from streams and lakes, or raw, semi-processed or processed water, industrial wastewater, or water from other sources to assess pollution problem, and collects soil, silt, or mud to determine chemical composition and nature of pollutants.
  • Prepares sample for testing, records data, and prepares summaries and charts for review, sets monitoring equipment to provide flow of information, installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation.
  • May operate fixed or mobile monitoring or data collection station, may conduct bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity, may collect and analyze engine exhaust emissions to determine type and amount of pollutants, and may specialize in one phase or type of environmental pollution or protection and be identified according to specialty.
  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
