About The Position

The Environmental Technician will report to the Environmental Coordinator and is responsible for safe and efficient sampling, data collection, and assistance with regulatory reporting. Additionally, the Environmental Technician will be responsible for conducting inspections and or monitoring related to air, water and waste compliance programs. The schedule for this position is 4 days on at the remote mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 3 days off with the occasional 8 days on/6 days off schedule for required weekend coverage.

Employees may be frequently exposed to surface and underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, snow/ice, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules may require residency in remote camp during work rotations
Possess good computer knowledge (Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, etc.)
Able to work in a remote outdoor environment, often in inclement weather
Periodically work in an underground mine setting
Able to hike several miles over uneven ground
Work occasional weekends as scheduled
Ability to work with minimal supervision and communicate clearly (verbally and in writing) with all mine site personnel.
Sets high standards for self and others, builds trust, and takes accountability.

Nice To Haves

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or applied sciences preferred
Approximately 1-3 years of environmental field experience in an industrial setting preferred
Preference given to Alaska residents.

Responsibilities

Stop work for safety concerns, and abide by safety best practices, policies and procedures
Perform soil, groundwater, surface water, waste, sediment and air sampling
Perform manual stream flow measurements and associated hydrology monitoring
Perform employee environmental awareness training as needed
Collect, review and analyze environmental data
Input data into an environmental database
Use field instruments and equipment as necessary to meet health and safety as well as field sampling and O&M requirements
Assist with preparation of routine submittments to regulatory agencies to document system performance and compliance with permit requirements
Document all field activities and notes
Perform subcontractor oversight
Communicate effectively with project managers and client personnel
Has a high degree of health and safety awareness
Works within defined scopes, schedules and budgets while producing quality work
Maintains knowledge of sampling procedures and protocols in accordance with recognized industry standards
Perform other duties as assigned
