About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Aquatic Weed Control Program that involves both outdoor and indoor work. Approximately 90% of the time will be spent assisting other staff with fieldwork. Approximately 10% of the time will be spent assisting with data entry, GIS work and writing technical reports. A significant portion of the fieldwork will be assisting other staff with herbicide applications. The position is located at 512 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh - Wake County, with the Department of Environmental Quality. This role offers exposure to an agency's culture, processes, and procedures, potentially providing valuable experience for those seeking permanent employment with the state.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk through rough/uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work on/around water.
  • Ability to be exposed to inclement weather, machinery noise, fumes, and biting/stinging insects.
  • Must obtain a state-issued pesticide operator license within 30 days of hire and/or maintain a valid license for the duration of the assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting other staff with fieldwork, including herbicide applications.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment such as power tools, gas-powered engines, high-pressure sprayers, backpack sprayers, and brush cutters.
  • Operating motorboats and vehicles, including towing trailers.
  • Assisting with aquatic vegetation surveys.
  • Assisting with data entry, GIS work, and writing technical reports.
  • Traveling in state vehicles, including overnight stays.
  • Obtaining a state-issued pesticide operator license within 30 days of hire and/or maintaining a valid license for the duration of the assignment.
