About The Position

The Environmental Technician I is responsible for receiving, inspecting, sorting, and preparing cans and bottles for redemption. This role ensures Health & Safety is the priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies and procedures, and always acting in a safe manner. The technician receives and segregates cans & bottles from customers, prepares them for collection by distributors, and provides prompt payment to customers, balancing cash at the end of each day. They operate an automated can & bottle counting/sorting machine and utilize basic computer applications to update inventory files, as well as operate all assigned material handling and transport equipment. Additionally, the role assists with facility cleaning and grounds maintenance, including litter pick-up, painting, lawn mowing, weed control, and snow removal. Inspections and maintenance of facility and equipment are performed daily, with on-the-spot corrections when possible and special inspections as directed. The technician also assists with grooming bales of recycling commodities for outbound shipping and participates in all safety training, following established procedures, making recommendations for safety improvements, and correcting unsafe acts or conditions. Customer assistance with MWA Grow Gold Compost sales is also a responsibility. The position demonstrates an understanding of Metro Waste Authority’s Environmental Management System (EMS) and values, including Leadership, Integrity, Positivity, Teamwork, and Innovation.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Assists customers with MWA Grow Gold Compost sales.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Metro Waste Authority’s Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Metro Waste Authority’s values and applies them to the position, and assigned responsibilities, as well as to all interactions with customers and co-workers.
