About The Position

Environmental Technician - Asbestos Provides hands-on field and documentation support for hazardous building materials and indoor air quality programs. Supports asbestos, `PCB`, lead, and radon sampling and inspections for facility renovation and demolition projects. Follows established procedures and quality requirements to protect personnel and ensure accurate, compliant results.  

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical coursework in environmental science, industrial hygiene, chemistry, or a related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience in environmental field sampling, facility compliance support, or hazardous materials/industrial hygiene support.
  • Ability to follow written sampling procedures, maintain accurate field logs, and manage chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Ability to perform field work in industrial environments while using required PPE and safety practices.
  • Completion of a 3-Day Asbestos Inspector Course and State of Indiana asbestos inspector certification (or ability to obtain as required).
  • `40-hour HAZWOPER` with current annual refresher.
  • `NRPP` or `NRSB` radon measurement certification (or ability to obtain as required).
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal

Responsibilities

  • Support the Government Asbestos Program Manager and facility teams with asbestos surveys/inspections and bulk sampling for demolition and renovation projects, under supervision of senior staff.
  • Assist with development and execution of project-specific `QAPP` requirements; follow all sampling, field/lab testing, and `QA/QC` procedures approved by the Contractor `QAM` and accepted by the NSWC Crane EP `QAM`, applicable `IEPD`, and Environmental Media Manager.
  • Collect asbestos wipe and bulk samples as assigned, following OSHA (`29 CFR 1910.1001` and `29 CFR 1926.1101`) and applicable EPA requirements, and using controls to prevent airborne asbestos exposure to Government personnel and/or property.
  • Document sample locations, field conditions, and chain-of-custody; support preparation of asbestos reports for Government submittal.
  • Perform periodic asbestos inspections when requested and support data calls by organizing historic sampling data and records.
  • Support `PCB` inspections and sampling, including collection of samples from mixed media and oil samples from electrical/electronic equipment, hydraulic systems, transformers, and other materials, as assigned.
  • Track and package samples for laboratory analysis; maintain chain-of-custody and required documentation; support development of `PCB` summary reports and provide analytical results to Government program points of contact.
  • Support mixed-media sampling (including paint) for lead to support renovation and demolition planning, following approved `QAPP` procedures.
  • Conduct radon sampling in testable buildings at NSA Crane and Lake Glendora Test Facility as assigned, following `NAVRAMP` (most current) and state requirements, and documenting placement, retrieval, and results processing.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and investigations by collecting field observations, photos, and notes; communicate issues promptly to senior staff.
