About The Position

Removes asbestos from ceilings, walls, boilers, and other structures, following hazardous waste handling guidelines. This role involves sealing off work areas, setting up decontamination units, and performing waste disposal and site evacuation procedures. The Environmental Tech will operate environmental and protective equipment, work in enclosed and damp environments for extended periods, and work at heights using ladders and scaffolding. They are responsible for verifying the condition of safety equipment, determining material and equipment needs, and performing all tasks safely in accordance with departmental procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in an enclosed damp environment for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to wear required respiratory equipment and protective clothing.
  • Ability to work at heights using ladders and scaffolding.
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste handling guidelines.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, lumber, nails, plastic sheeting, and duct tape.
  • Experience with operating environmental and protective equipment.
  • Ability to verify condition of all safety equipment.
  • Ability to determine material and equipment needs.
  • Proficiency in using knives and scrapers.
  • Ability to shovel asbestos into disposal bags and seal them.
  • Experience with cleaning work areas using vacuum, broom, and dust pan.
  • Ability to dismantle scaffolding and temporary walkways.
  • Ability to load disposal bags into a truck.
  • Adherence to departmental safety procedures.
  • Safe operation of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Seals off work area using plastic sheeting and duct tape.
  • Positions mobile decontamination unit or portable showers at entrance of work area.
  • Builds connecting walkway between mobile unit or portable showers and work area.
  • Positions portable air evacuation and filtration system inside work area.
  • Performs waste disposal and site evacuation procedures.
  • Sets up and operates environmental and protective equipment.
  • Works in an enclosed damp environment for extended periods of time, wearing required respiratory equipment and protective clothing.
  • Works at heights using ladders and scaffolding.
  • Verifies condition of all safety equipment.
  • Determines material and equipment needs.
  • Sprays chemical solution over asbestos covered surfaces to soften asbestos.
  • Cuts and scrapes asbestos from surfaces.
  • Shovels asbestos into plastic disposal bags and seals bags.
  • Cleans work area of loose asbestos using vacuum, broom, and dust pan.
  • Places asbestos in disposal bags and seals bags.
  • Dismantles scaffolding and temporary walkway.
  • Loads asbestos disposal bags into truck.
  • Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures.
  • Operates equipment safely.
  • Reports any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
