About The Position

The Environmental Systems Control Operator (ECSO) reports directly to the Regional Environmental Manager (REM) and indirectly to the Regional Directors for SSI’s Auto and Metals Recycling Business division. Work may also be supervised by local or national Environmental Department employees. The ECSO implements and supports compliance with company policies and procedures covering environmental media, including air, stormwater, groundwater, solid waste, and hazardous waste. The role operates and maintains environmental control systems (ECSs), including stormwater treatment and air-emission control systems, to meet applicable federal, state, and local laws, standards, permits, regulatory orders, and agreements at multiple facilities. The ECSO conducts fieldwork involving sampling, monitoring, observation, and recording of environmental data, and provides accurate information to the REM and facility managers. The position assists with planning, design, and installation of ECSs and has direct first-line responsibility for their effective operation and for associated metering and measuring devices. In consultation with environmental leadership, the ECSO may assist with urgent responses to system upsets, environmental incidents, spills, releases, and accidents, and with notifications to management and regulatory agencies. The role operates within flexible parameters and is primarily focused on maintaining and operating ECSs safely, effectively, and efficiently. Approximately 80% of the time is spent in the field. Systems may include stormwater treatment technologies such as oil-water separation, settling, polymer treatment, electrocoagulation, sand filtration, and carbon filtration; and air-emission controls such as extraction systems, drop-out boxes, cyclones, scrubbers, thermal oxidizers, and baghouses. The position also supports permit compliance records, equipment improvements and maintenance, contractor coordination, waste management related to system operations, budgeting, and special projects. The work takes place in offices and active industrial field environments at various locations. It includes equipment troubleshooting and maintenance, system operation, air and water sampling, and information gathering. The operator must be able to walk and climb in active facilities, including over uneven surfaces and to isolated areas, and be comfortable with heights and outdoor work in inclement weather. Occasional urgent responses outside normal hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required. Frequent travel by automobile or airplane to local and regional locations is required. The stated salary range is $35.00 to $40.00 per hour.
