About The Position

The State Hygienic Laboratory in Coralville is looking for an Environmental Supervisor within the Ambient Air Quality Section of the Environmental Health Division. This position consists of both field work and in-house supervision of staff. This position routinely participates in fieldwork that involves travelling across the state of Iowa, occasionally requiring overnight stays. Use of ladders is frequent with some equipment stationed on top of trailers and buildings. Primary field work responsibilities are verification and maintenance of continually running monitors. In-house responsibilities include supervision of a small group of field operators, inventory management, data entry, and editing/writing SOPs. Additional responsibilities may include response to emergency situations including monitoring of fire emissions and potentially illegal activities that result in acute and/or chronic air quality degradation. Active participation in professional development opportunities and promotion of the ambient air monitoring program in Iowa is an expectation.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, or environmental science with emphasis on analytical chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar type of laboratory is required.
  • Demonstrates a minimum of 3 years’ working knowledge of maintaining, servicing, and calibration of Air Quality monitoring equipment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with a variety of individuals, both as part of a team and in a leadership role.
  • Extensive proficiency with Windows based systems, computer and digital operations.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, using varied tools and techniques to transmit, receive, and interpret information, both written and verbally.
  • Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, and the ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards.
