About The Position

The Environmental intern will assist LESS and Lakeside Association in implementing the Lakeside Association LCA Strategic Plan’s Environmental and Ecology workgroup recommendations for 2026 and beyond. The environmental intern will also self-select an area listed below that is most closely aligned with the career field pursued by the intern. A strong emphasis will be placed on measures and goals. The Environmental Intern reports directly to the Lakeside Environmental Stewardship Society (LESS) President (Frank Baker) in collaboration with the Lakeside Association Municipal Services Department with regards to all aspects of their position. The Lakeside Director of Education (John Mann will assist LESS with oversight of the intern program. Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the operation or residents and guests of the property.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be able to lift heavy equipment and material up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.

  • Experience reviewing Strategic Plan’s Environmental and Ecology Plan and making recommendations for improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Identify costs and benefits of projects or initiatives, including life cycle costs, returns on investment and pay-back times, environmental benefits, etc. Prepare reports and written analyses for review by the Lakeside administration.
  • Learn and utilize TreePlotter software and continue to inventory trees in designated areas of Lakeside as directed.
  • Assist in conducting and organizing the Tree Tours
  • Organize, assist and collaborate with all Lakeside organizations to implement the Strategic Plan- Environment and Ecology workgroup recommendations, including but not limited to Lakeside Property Owners Association LPOA (e.g. recycling presentations at LPOA meeting), Lakeside Heritage Society LHS (e.g. recycling or sustainability presentation at LHS education events, assist in writing articles on the role of LHS in Sustainability via preservation and education), Lakeside Retail Group LRG (e.g. compostable tableware initiative, assist LRG in creation of specific actions to achieve the Sustainability Goals i.e. the Four Zeros), Society of Old Salts SOS (assist in creation of specific actions to achieve the Sustainability Goals i.e. the Four Zeros) (Electric outboard for the “Crash Boat”), Lakeside Wooden Boat Society LWBS (Electric outboard for the “Crash Boat”, help to educate the new LWBS President in defining the role of wooden boats in Sustainability), Lakeside Women’s Club LWC (organize, maintain, educate and publicize the Sustainability Library), Historic Preservation and Design Review Board HPDRB (Assist in encouraging Green Building principals: preservation, restoration, Zero Energy, material salvage, etc.).
  • Contribute articles to The Lakesider to raise awareness of the implementation and effect of sustainability concepts.
  • Provide oversite and organization of the 2025 Sustainable Cottage Open House.
  • Develop a Sustainability Fair in conjunction with the Electric Vehicle weekly exhibit.
  • If successful, consider developing a Sustainability Week involving the entire community.
  • Explore collaboration on sustainability with America In Bloom and the Lakeside sustainability plan https://americainbloom.org/about/. Possibly set a plan for the 2025 intern to implement.
  • Participate in all LESS meetings/events and report sustainability progress. (Board meetings are scheduled for each month during the Chautauqua Program Season.
  • Participate in all Lakeside intern activities, forums and gatherings.
  • Facilitate food waste recycling, expanding the program to all LCA owned properties and activities
  • Assist in creating and administering a LESS marketing plan including sourcing and managing LESS promotional material.
  • Assist in creating, promoting, and administering Sustainability programming.
  • Conduct and maintain an audit identifying and recording current green practices in Lakeside-owned facilities and businesses (i.e., energy efficiency efforts, recycling, etc.), targeting practices that could be expanded or can be of significant impact.
  • Recommend new green practices in Lakeside for implementation (i.e., use of sustainable materials, solar power, wind power, Electric Vehicle use incentives, Zero Energy construction principles, etc.)
  • Coordinate with surrounding communities to explore partnership opportunities.
  • Review the Strategic Plan’s Environmental and Ecology Plan and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned
