Requirements

  • University graduation in a related field Such as Environmental Science, Agrology, Biology or Forestry plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below
  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with specification and standards development to provide a consistent and compliant approach for the delivery of projects.
  • The position must have an in-depth knowledge of the department's policies (i.e. planning, design, construction and operations). A solid understanding is gained through both academic study and practical experience.
  • A related university degree in environmental related science supplements by four years of relevant experience. This position must have a thorough of the core Ecosystem Components ( e.g. wildlife, fisheries, navigation, water quality, hydrology and wetlands) in order to adequately recognize impacts to environmental receptors and develop specifications and mitigation measures intended to address these impacts.
  • This position requires expert knowledge with respect to fish passage, fish habitat assessment and aquatic biology of Alberta.
  • Experience in championing and implementing innovative solutions.
  • Familiarity with department structure and process is an asset.
  • Strong communications skills, with demonstrated ability to collaborate with stakeholders while focusing on client needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of environmental standards, specifications, and guidance to support regulatory compliance across project lifecycles.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on environmental legislation (e.g., Fisheries Act, Alberta Water Act), providing technical advice on complex issues related to aquatic environments, wetlands, wildlife, and water quality.
  • Support highway and water infrastructure projects by interpreting regulations, resolving environmental challenges, and ensuring projects remain compliant and on schedule.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, regulators, and external stakeholders to align standards and influence policy development.
  • Develop and deliver training and guidance materials to support consistent application of environmental requirements.
