About The Position

This position is within the Environmental Health Program at the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. The primary responsibility is the water program, including residential wells, limited use wells, and the EDB program, ensuring compliance with codes and statutes. The role also involves reviewing applications for new drinking water systems, coordinating new well construction, and training staff on septic inspections. Additionally, the position performs inspections for tanning facilities, biomedical waste, and mobile home parks, and may assist with animal bite programs and rodent complaints. Responsibilities include accurate and timely completion of all job-related paperwork, improving environmental health performance, investigating nuisance complaints, and auditing facility files for completeness. The role also requires maintaining confidentiality and security of records, and performing other duties as required, including Environmental Assessments.

Requirements

  • Current Florida Department of Health (DOH) Employee.
  • At least 3 years of verifiable environmental health regulatory work experience with the Florida Department of Health.
  • Experience in Biomedical Waste, Tanning, Mobile Home Parks, Migrant Labor, Body Piercing, and or Tattooing inspections within the last year.
  • A valid FL driver’s license OR a valid driver’s license from another state (will be required to get a FL driver license within 30 days of hire).
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle to complete site inspections in Orange County.
  • Must be able to kneel, bend, lift and carry 50 pounds, maneuver different types of terrain, and use fine motor skills to obtain soil, water and other samples.
  • Must be able to work in the office and field.
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer visa sponsorship.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, monitor compliance, and update files for the water program (residential wells, limited use wells, EDB program), ensuring adherence to applicable codes and statutes.
  • Review applications for new drinking water systems.
  • Coordinate and track new well construction installations and train OSTDS staff for septic inspections.
  • Perform inspections for tanning, biomedical waste, and mobile home parks to ensure compliance with mandated timeframes.
  • Assist in the animal bite program and respond to rodent complaints as necessary.
  • Complete and submit all job-related paperwork, including timesheets, mileage, and EARS, legibly and in proper order.
  • Improve environmental health performance by completing assigned community Environmental Health expectations.
  • Investigate assigned nuisance complaints and follow up as necessary.
  • Audit facility files for completeness, ensuring updated applications, site plans, legal letters, and permits, and make necessary corrections or updates.
  • Perform other duties as required or directed, including Environmental Assessments.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of records as specified by department regulations and laws.
