About The Position

This position performs work in the OSTDS Program relating to commercial and residential installations and repairs. This includes onsite soil evaluations and site delineations to determine hydrological absorption rate, interpret data, and recommend necessary engineering for onsite sewage disposal system installations or repairs. It also involves onsite surveys of general and specific topographical features, elevations, and proximity to public and private water supplies. The incumbent will ensure compliance with regulations and make recommendations for permit issuance or denial. This position assists Environmental Health Staff with difficult problems to achieve compliance with applicable statutes and codes pertaining to public health and fulfills OSTDS program needs. Physical inspection of septic installs, repairs, and nuisances is required, along with the ability to comfortably conduct professional inspections. The position is also responsible for IMs inspections and investigating citizen complaints on water, sewage, and/or other environmental issues affecting community health/safety. It prepares preliminary enforcement actions for non-compliance by issuing notices of violation (NOV). The role is directly responsible for all other related duties that may arise or be assigned to carry out the Environmental Health Program for the Lake County Health Department. Responsibilities include accountability, maintenance, and availability of tools, equipment, vehicles, and knowledge on how to use them. Emergency response availability is expected, and acquiring OSTDS certification is required.

Requirements

  • Intermediate level skill in the operation of a personal computer and the use of common software applications.
  • Appropriate physical conditioning to effectively perform the required functions of a field position when needed.
  • Ability to work safely in inclement weather conditions, i.e. temperatures exceeding 95 degrees f, rain, etc.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Able to distinguish soil colors.
  • Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or 30 hours of Biological Sciences.
  • Able to work in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Willing to meet the requirement of duo certification in both food and OTSDS programs within six months of employment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Have a current valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

  • Willing to work in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
