About The Position

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) is seeking an Environmental Specialist 2 for its Division of Surface Water (DSW) at the Central Office in Columbus, Ohio. This role involves evaluating complex environmental issues related to nonpoint sources and watersheds in aquatic systems, using biological organism groups as indicators of surface water quality. The position requires participation in Ohio EPA's Medical Monitoring Program. The specialist will adjust and implement study design changes to optimize data quality, participate in the development and refinement of policies and procedures for watershed level assessments and biological criteria, and evaluate/revise use designations, plans, and reviews. Additionally, the role includes coordinating plans for biological and water quality assessments of environmental issues related to water pollution, providing technical guidance to personnel, coordinating the production of technical documents, and providing training to other scientists and college interns.

Requirements

  • 12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
  • OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents.
  • Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate complex environmental issues related to nonpoint sources and watersheds in aquatic systems utilizing indigenous biological organism groups as indicators of Ohio’s surface water resource quality.
  • Adjust and implement study design changes to optimize data quality and level of evaluation.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures by working to develop and refine specific applications of watershed level assessments and biological criteria as part of those assessments and consistent with Ohio Water Quality Standards.
  • Evaluate and revise use designations, plans, and reviews.
  • Coordinate plans for biological and water quality assessments of specific environmental issues dealing with complex water pollution problems as they relate to chemical and biological water resource quality.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to personnel involved in the evaluation of biological and water quality impacts.
  • Coordinate the production of technical documents and statements for meetings dealing with biological condition and sediment quality in surface waters.
  • Provide training for other scientists and college interns.
