About The Position

This is a part-time position in the Environmental Services Department at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. The role involves cleaning and disinfecting various areas within the hospital and off-site facilities, operating equipment, using chemicals safely, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. The position also emphasizes customer satisfaction, proper patient discharge procedures, and maintaining departmental standards for cleanliness and safety. The role requires adherence to infection control policies and procedures, preparing cleaning solutions, floor care, furniture and carpet shampooing, moving equipment, and managing waste and linen distribution.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience
  • Basic computer skills preferred
  • Able to operate small electrical equipment e.g., vacuum cleaners
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English as related to the performance of essential job activities (including reading and comprehending chemical labels and other safety materials)
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For lifts over 35 pounds, lifting equipment is expected to be used or lift with at least one other associate when available.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect assigned areas, including patient rooms, offices, restrooms, elevators, stairwells, and other hospital areas.
  • Operate various cleaning equipment following department procedures.
  • Use chemicals and solutions according to department policy.
  • Maintain orderly, clean, and safe work areas.
  • Utilize AIDET with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively.
  • Maintain a positive and supportive attitude towards patients, families, and personnel.
  • Display patience and tact when dealing with hospital personnel.
  • Present the department in a positive manner to all contacts.
  • Maintain a courteous and pleasant attitude towards patients, families, and other contacts.
  • Maintain confidential patient and departmental information.
  • Utilize appropriate chain of command for resolving complaints or problems.
  • Perform thorough washing and sanitizing of beds and rooms after patient discharges.
  • Make beds with clean linen in accordance with department procedures.
  • Use appropriate germicide in disinfecting rooms.
  • Select and transport cleaning materials and supplies appropriate to the job.
  • Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet tissues, and soap.
  • Collect waste and sanitize garbage cans.
  • Observe and follow Standard (Universal) Precautions, Infection Control Policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Clean and sanitize after emergency spills.
  • Place full bags of soiled linen in linen chutes.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, visitors, and associates.
  • Wash hands thoroughly throughout the day and adhere to handwash policy.
  • Prepare detergents, germicidal solutions, and other cleaning/disinfecting solutions according to established formulas.
  • Sweep, dust mop, and wet mop floor areas and spot clean carpets.
  • Shampoo furniture, carpets, and rugs using appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Identify types of soil and utilize proper solutions as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Handle chemicals and solutions following departmental policies.
  • Ensure all chemicals and solutions are in properly labeled containers.
  • Adhere to safety regulations as outlined in departmental policy and procedure.
  • Move equipment and furniture for cleaning, rearrangement, and/or relocation.
  • Arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion after cleaning.
  • Arrange furniture for meetings, workshops, and community affairs as required.
  • Clean equipment and notify supervisor of equipment needing repair.
  • Appropriately report safety hazards.
  • Return unused supplies to closets, clean carts and equipment, and ensure all items are replaced in an orderly manner.
  • Collect and/or distribute soiled and/or clean linens.
  • Collect trash and/or waste from all areas of the hospital.
  • Collect hazardous and medical waste according to procedures established by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Sanitize all garbage/waste disposal containers.
  • Separate regular and recycle trash according to procedure.
  • Attend all mandatory departmental and hospital meetings and inservices.
  • Complete annual CBT's required.
  • Follow written department goals and objectives.
  • Seek education and learning experiences in areas of identified growth needs.
  • Maintain proper attendance requirements outlined in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Plan for special days off in advance and submit written requests for time off.
  • Request PTO time in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Provide adequate notice for absence and call two hours before the beginning of shift if absent.
