About The Position

Join the North Carolina Zoo during an exciting period of growth as we prepare for the opening of Asia! The North Carolina Zoo is looking for several enthusiastic new team members that love working outdoors and interacting with guests. The Environmental Services Assistant (Housekeeper) assists in the direct delivery of custodial operations within the zoo, at remote locations and custodial services requested by the NC Zoo Society and special event coordinators. Position performs routine, manual work cleaning and maintaining buildings, trails, commercial plazas, parking lots and picnic fields. The employee performs recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules. When problems arise, employee refers them to the Environmental Services Supervisor or Environmental Services Branch Manager. Error reveled by inspection of work, may affect Guests’ perception of the Zoo. Supervision is direct with frequent inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions and standards of cleanliness. Position is required to provide timely, accurate, friendly, efficient and effective housekeeping services to the Zoo’s 1,000,000+ Guests per year as well as to Guests invited to special events and/or affairs at the Zoo.

Requirements

  • Education and/or experience in housekeeping work that is directly related to the job.
  • Scheduled workdays: Monday through Friday, 7:00am - 4:00pm OR Saturday and Sunday, 6:30am – 5:30pm
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule that involves working weekends, holidays and after regular work shifts .
  • Required to participate in the zoo's occupational health program.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have good physical agility, strength, vision & hearing, and the ability to perform strenuous physical work in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments, e.g. outdoor animal enclosures.
  • Specifically, walking, standing, and seeing animals & exhibits for observation and safety as well as hearing animal sounds, radio communication and emergency situations
  • Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Overall cleaning of zoo grounds, commercial plazas, trail trashcans, 5 miles of trails, Guest areas, parking lots and restrooms.
  • Cleaning and restocking restrooms using various cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Collection and sorting or recycling and compost materials.
  • Work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions. Outdoor work is approximately 80% of the day.
  • Use of two-day radio for communication.
  • Use of strong commercial cleaning chemicals and equipment such as pressure washers, floor machines, etc. as needed.
