About The Position

To maintain a clean and sanitary environment for patients, staff, and visitors at Christiana Care. This role involves maintaining all patient, office, and ancillary areas of the hospital in a clean and sanitary condition, as well as ensuring all carts and equipment are kept clean, orderly, and safe. The position also requires maintaining Environmental Services closets, stocking paper and soap supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting precaution rooms according to infection control policies. Responsibilities include picking up and transporting trash, soiled linen, and infectious waste to designated areas, operating a trash compactor, and performing floor care, carpet/upholstery shampooing, wall/window washing, and furniture/equipment transport as assigned. The role may also involve assisting with snow removal and salt distribution. Additionally, the Environmental Services Assistant III is expected to attend inservice training, report maintenance issues, maintain a helpful attitude, and respond to pages in a timely manner. Specialized equipment operation includes a battery-operated tram, riding equipment (dust mop, scrubber, sweepervac), and a battery-operated forklift. Daily care and cleaning of equipment, recharging trams, and removing specific waste containers from patient rooms are also key duties. The position emphasizes performing all assigned work safely and adhering to departmental safety rules, reporting any unsafe activities or conditions promptly.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write at a high school level.
  • Ability to understand/communicate in the English language.
  • Ability to lift and walk with a weight of up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of personal hygiene.
  • Ability to maintain a courteous, service oriented helpful attitude throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in a standing position and carry out normally assigned duties for the entire shift.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, especially regarding patients.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of housekeeping experience preferred.
  • High school graduate preferred or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains all patient, office, and ancillary areas of the hospital in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Maintains all carts/equipment in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Maintains a clean/orderly appearance in all Environmental Services closets.
  • Maintains paper and soap supplies in all areas of the hospital.
  • Cleans/disinfects all precaution rooms in accordance with infection control policies and procedures.
  • Picks up trash in assigned areas and places in central location for bulk pick-up.
  • Operates trash compactor as necessary.
  • Maintains cleanliness of all trash/linen chute rooms.
  • Picks up/transports soiled linen to specified holding area.
  • Picks up and transports infectious waste containers to designated holding area.
  • Strips/refinishes floor, shampoos carpets/upholstery, washes walls/windows, and transports furniture/ equipment as assigned.
  • Assists in snow removal and salt distribution as assigned.
  • Attends regularly scheduled inservice training programs given by the department.
  • Reports any maintenance problems or damages to Supervisor.
  • Maintains a helpful, productive attitude throughout the workday.
  • Answers Environmental Services pages when assigned in a timely manner.
  • Operates battery-operated tram, moves large trash and linen containers to designated areas.
  • Operates battery-operated riding equipment (Rider dust mop, Rider scrubber, Rider sweepervac) and follows procedures for safe operations in accordance with Department Policy.
  • Operates battery operated fork lift.
  • Performs daily care and cleaning of equipment in accordance with department procedure.
  • Recharges trams as needed.
  • Picks up trash and soiled linen in assigned areas.
  • Removes needle/glove boxes, chemo buckets, and soiled equipment from patient rooms and takes to soiled utility room.
  • Loads cardboard bales onto trailer or moves bales within building for temporary holding.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
