About The Position

UPMC Altoona is hiring for a full-time Environmental Services Assistant/Housekeeping position. This role involves maintaining the hospital in an orderly and sanitary condition. The position works a dayshift schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with rotation as needed, and requires weekend and holiday rotation. The starting pay is $14.64 per hour, and the position is part of the AFSCME union.

Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and handle heavy to light loads by pushing or pulling refuse carts and electric or battery powered equipment.
  • Able to bend, stoop, climb, push, pull, crawl and stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to follow written and oral instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge with how to use a computer and cell phone.
  • Act 34 clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior training in institutional cleaning desired but not necessary.
  • Previous experience in similar work preferred.
  • High school graduate or GED preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all departmental equipment in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner, maintaining equipment before storage.
  • Climbs ladders to hang drapes or for cleaning/disinfecting purposes.
  • Cleans and services hospital building areas, moves furniture, equipment, and supplies, and performs various housekeeping duties.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, and inside windows by hand or machine; may wash outside windows and screens.
  • Washes drapes, cubicles, mops, and rags when requested.
  • Gathers and disposes of refuse; washes wastebaskets and large refuse containers.
  • Cleans light fixtures, tops of windows, door frames, and other high places using ladders or scaffolds.
  • Moves equipment, furniture, and files when requested by supervision.
  • Uses chemicals in a safe and efficient manner according to guidelines and wears required personal protective equipment.
  • Disinfects areas by scrubbing and spraying with approved germicide cleaner.
  • Terminally cleans and disinfects patient rooms, isolation rooms, floors, beds, restrooms, furniture, and equipment after transfer or discharge, following Infection Control procedures.
  • Collects all regular and infectious waste according to established guidelines.
  • Scours, polishes, and washes sinks, tubs, mirrors, and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Cleans water coolers and replaces disposables like towels, soap, and toilet tissue.
  • Performs daily and routine quality checks/reviews and makes necessary improvements.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and wet scrubs floors, halls, and stairways.
  • Receives daily assignments and supplies, transports them to the work area, and returns unused supplies at the end of the shift.
  • Cleans utility cart and equipment at the end of the shift.
  • Performs repetitive tasks to maintain assigned areas in a sanitary, orderly, and attractive condition.
  • Assembles necessary cleaning supplies and equipment for transport to the assigned work area.
  • Makes discharge beds with clean linen.
  • Requests help for heavy furniture or equipment moves.
  • Notifies supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Reports any mechanical failures or conditions observed in assigned areas for work requests.
