Environmental Service Worker I
About The Position
Performs a variety of grounds maintenance services to maintain and enhance the beautification of the City of Atlanta. Work may include garbage and recycling collection, cleaning, repairs, general maintenance, and landscaping with hand and power tools. This is the entry level of the job family. Employees are expected to have basic knowledge of the work, motor skills, and physical capabilities needed for basic tasks. They typically perform simpler tasks, assist higher-level workers with more complex work, and prepare or put away tools. The position works under general supervision, typically as part of a work crew responsible for completing assigned tasks. The role follows standardized procedures and written instructions and helps maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout the city. It may include providing basic information in response to citizen inquiries and overseeing temporary or contract workers as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of related experience.
- Basic knowledge of landscaping and grounds-maintenance tools, equipment, practices, and techniques.
- Basic arithmetic knowledge.
- Skill in landscaping and grounds maintenance work, calculating quantities and distances, maintaining accurate records, preparing simple work reports, using a computer, and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to operate a radio.
- Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities to perform the job successfully.
- Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
Nice To Haves
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License is desirable.
- High school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience.
Responsibilities
- Perform general lawn care, landscaping, and maintenance in assigned areas.
- Mow and trim grass and remove clippings, leaves, and debris from grounds.
- Prune bushes and trees using hand and power tools, including lawnmowers, saws, weed eaters, pruners, and blowers.
- Remove illegal signs from street signs, light poles, and utility poles.
- Pick up litter, debris, and bulk trash as part of grounds maintenance.
- Sweep, rake, and blow walkways, parking lots, natural lands, and other public areas.
- Prepare and operate equipment used in street cleaning.
- Collect waste and recycling materials along established routes through residential streets, alleys, and business or industrial areas.
- Clean and inspect trucks before routes to ensure safe operating condition; inspect equipment and complete reports for defective equipment.
- Follow standardized procedures and written instructions to complete assigned tasks.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout the City of Atlanta by following applicable procedures and instructions.
- Provide basic information in response to citizen inquiries.
- Oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
