About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare. This role is within the Water Quality Program and supports the goals of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Louisiana Environmental Quality Act (LEQA). The Environmental Scientist will evaluate water quality, analyze environmental data, support regulatory and assessment activities, and help inform decisions that protect Louisiana’s waters. The position involves using a variety of data, database, reporting, and statistical tools while collaborating with environmental professionals. There are opportunities to train, mentor, and share knowledge with fellow environmental scientists, contribute to team development, and work under the direction of an Environmental Scientist Supervisor.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing, evaluating, and reporting water quality data.
  • Becoming familiar with Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) contract laboratory requirements.
  • Understanding and following Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) related to assigned data sets.
  • Understanding and following applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Reading, understanding, and evaluating water quality data reports, including quality control (QC) information, using established analytical methods (such as EPA and Standard Methods).
