About The Position

The Department of Environmental Quality is hiring an Environmental Scientist in the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control. The position may be filled at the Environmental Scientist I, II, or III level, with salary based on the level offered. The role focuses on hazardous waste generator compliance, including inspections, reporting, enforcement, and compliance assistance. The position is hybrid and based at 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Requirements

• Experience performing regulatory compliance evaluations for large quantity and small quantity hazardous waste generators.
• Ability to draft detailed, technically and legally sound inspection reports and enforcement actions within required timeframes.
• Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with a team.
• Versatile interpersonal skills and ability to adapt communication styles to engage with people with varied professional and educational backgrounds.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to wear a full-face respirator and carry at least 20 pounds of equipment.

Nice To Haves

• A bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in environmental sciences or a related field such as engineering, geology, or chemistry.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hazardous waste generator inspections at large quantity and small quantity generators.
• Draft detailed inspection reports and enforcement actions that are technically sound and legally enforceable.
• Provide compliance assistance to help regulated entities return to compliance.
• Coordinate work independently and with a team.
