About The Position

By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML), Program Development Branch, Environmental Assessment Section as an Environmental Scientist Advisor in Franklin county, you will have the opportunity to serve as a team leader and coordinate staff activities responsible for reviewing the implementation of scientific and technical programs and studies for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) program associated with AML Reclamation Projects in the Eastern and Western Kentucky coal fields.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
  • Five years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
  • Experience working and communicating with outside agencies.
  • Experience with GIS software (ArcPro)

Nice To Haves

  • Edit and create maps using GIS software.
  • Read project plans and technical drawings.
  • Read and interpret geology and mine/mining maps.

Responsibilities

  • Review, evaluate and provide scientific and technical documents to the Federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) to obtain Authorization to Proceed (ATP)
  • Evaluate and enter scientific project information in Federal Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System (AMLIS) ensuring proper documentation is reflected within the database.
  • Perform biological reviews associated with AML reclamation projects as part of the NEPA process.
  • Use GIS software to geo-reference project plans associated with all AML reclamation projects that are being reviewed for ATP from the Federal Office of Surface Mining.
  • Conduct site visits and prepare reports on future AML projects providing scientific review of the plans and descriptions.
