About The Position

The Environmental Science Co-op Student supports the MEMS Environmental Services team by assisting with environmental assessment, monitoring, and remediation projects across regulatory, biophysical, contaminated sites, and water resource disciplines. This role is designed for a post-secondary student currently enrolled in Environmental Sciences, Water Resources, Geology (with a water specialization), or related program who is seeking practical, hands-on experience through a structured co-op or internship placement. The position provides exposure to both field and office-based work while reinforcing MEMS’ core values of Service, Quality, Trust, Innovation, and Teamwork.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Water Resources,, or related program.
  • Geology students with a water-related focus will be considered.
  • Registered in, or eligible for, a recognized co-op or internship program.
  • Interest in environmental management, contaminated sites, regulatory compliance, and/or water resources.
  • Basic understanding of environmental fieldwork principles or willingness to learn.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Professional, safety-conscious attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Valid Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s licence or ability to obtain one during the placement.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous field, laboratory, or co-op experience is considered an asset but is not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field programs related to environmental site assessments, biophysical surveys, groundwater and surface water sampling, and environmental monitoring under the supervision of senior staff.
  • Support soil, groundwater, and environmental data collection, including preparation, field documentation, and equipment handling.
  • Participate in regulatory, contaminated sites, and water resource projects to gain exposure to environmental consulting practices.
  • Assist with groundwater monitoring activities and basic data review.
  • Support compilation of field notes, organization of data, and review of laboratory results.
  • Assist with preparation of figures, tables, and supporting materials for technical reports.
  • Track field time, expenses, and assigned tasks accurately.
  • Carry out assigned work in accordance with project scopes, schedules, quality requirements, and MEMS procedures.
  • Actively seek learning opportunities and mentorship from Environmental Scientists, Engineers, and Project Managers.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist with a variety of tasks as project needs evolve.
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams while developing professional confidence and technical skills.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental policies and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support team and organizational needs.
