About The Position

SpaceX is seeking an Environmental Regulatory Engineer to lead federal environmental permitting and environmental field work for assigned projects. The role supports projects from due diligence and surveys through design and construction, helping teams understand environmental constraints, remain compliant as plans change, and find practical solutions when project plans conflict with requirements. The engineer will work with construction crews in the field, partner with EHS on site controls and natural-resource requirements, and coordinate with regulators and internal stakeholders to integrate permitting into project schedules. The position is based in the Memphis, Tennessee area, is not remote or hybrid, and may require relocation for candidates who are not local. Extended hours or weekends may be needed, and travel to locations including Florida, California, and Texas—and internationally if required—is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 2 years of experience in environmental due diligence, natural resources, or construction-phase compliance.
  • Experience with delineations, habitat assessments, or threatened and endangered species surveys.
  • Experience working with design teams, construction teams, or both, on active projects.
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends when needed.
  • Ability to travel to various locations, including Florida, California, and Texas.
  • Ability to travel internationally if required.
  • Must meet the stated U.S. government export regulation eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred in environmental science, ecology, biology, environmental engineering, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Working proficiency with GIS.
  • Demonstrated field judgment, including adapting when plans change and acting when something is going wrong.
  • Experience coordinating with federal, state, or local environmental regulators.
  • Due diligence support for site acquisition or development.
  • Experience leading field crews or contractors.
  • Familiarity with permits and consultations typically applicable to land development and construction.
  • Experience partnering with EHS on an active industrial or construction site.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize multiple projects, and follow through to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to document and manage key project details.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to lead and organize large meetings.
  • Excellent document delivery skills, report organization, and technical editing.
  • Experience using Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.

  • Lead the acquisition of federal environmental permits.
  • Lead environmental field work for assigned projects, including due diligence, delineations, habitat assessments, and threatened and endangered species surveys.
  • Use GIS to capture field conditions and communicate constraints to design, construction, and leadership.
  • Help design and construction engineers maintain compliance as plans change, and offer practical options when plans conflict with environmental constraints.
  • Guide construction crews in the field so work stays within environmental limits.
  • Partner with EHS where stormwater, spills, waste, and site controls intersect with natural-resource and permit requirements.
  • Maintain productive relationships with external regulatory agencies, including the EPA, state environmental departments, and local authorities, on permitting matters.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, Civil, EHS, legal, engineering, and operations teams to identify permitting needs and integrate them into project timelines.
  • Conduct risk assessments for permitting requirements and advise on strategies to mitigate regulatory delays or non-compliance risks.
