About The Position

The Environmental Manager partners with project teams to ensure construction site compliance with company environmental programs, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This role provides leadership in environmental compliance, risk management, permitting, environmental monitoring, and hazardous materials management throughout the project lifecycle. The Environmental Manager develops and implements project-specific environmental programs, provides technical guidance on environmental regulations and best management practices, and supports project teams in achieving environmental performance objectives. The position will initially be based out of our main office in Edmonton, Alberta, with the role later shifting to a project site located near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or a related field, and a minimum of six (6) years of environmental compliance, environmental management, or regulatory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience with Canadian construction environmental compliance, preferably in Alberta, including EPEA, Water Act, Fisheries Act, Public Lands Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, TDG, WHMIS, CEPA Environmental Emergency Regulations, NPRI, waste management, storage tank, and stormwater/dewatering requirements.
  • Experience managing environmental compliance for large-scale industrial, data center, energy, infrastructure, or heavy civil construction projects involving generators, fuel storage, temporary equipment, earthworks, dewatering, stormwater, soil import/off-haul, wetlands, wildlife, waste, and hazardous materials.
  • Experience maintaining environmental compliance trackers, permit registers, inspection records, regulatory/client submittals, corrective action logs, and project documentation systems.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable federal, provincial, and local environmental legislation, regulations, permits, and industry standards.
  • Experience developing and implementing environmental management systems, compliance programs, and environmental monitoring initiatives within construction or industrial environments.
  • Experience reviewing and managing environmental assessments, environmental permitting requirements, and hazardous materials programs.
  • Knowledge of environmental risk assessment, impact mitigation, incident investigation, and corrective action processes.
  • Working knowledge of construction operations and the environmental challenges associated with large-scale construction projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management experience, including the ability to mentor, coach, and develop others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports and present information to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic project environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, collaboration platforms, and environmental management software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and manage environmental compliance procedures and activities on a construction project, ensuring adherence to applicable regulations, permits, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Align project work procedures to client requirements and support the operations team in execution.
  • Serve as the project Environmental Point of Contact for client environmental communications, meetings, submittmits, inspections, audits, corrective actions, and environmental compliance tracking.
  • Maintain a project environmental compliance matrix, permit/commitment register, submittal tracker, environmental activity schedule, and document repository in alignment with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage compliance for project environmental permits and plans, including air emissions/generator commissioning, temporary emission sources, fuel tank registrations, stormwater, dewatering, water/wastewater, spill response, dust, noise, light, after-hours work, waste, soil, wetlands/watercourses, species, and cultural/historical resources.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific environmental plans, including Spill Response Plan, Stormwater Management Plan, Dust Control Plan, Dewatering/Groundwater Management Plan, Construction Water Management Plan, soil management procedures, and other client-required environmental plans.
  • Coordinate soil import/off-haul approvals, soil sampling and analytical review, topsoil/subsoil conservation, receiving/source facility due diligence, agricultural pest/Clubroot controls, and equipment decontamination/sanitation requirements.
  • Coordinate natural and cultural resource protections, including avoidance fencing, Limits of Disturbance controls, wetland/watercourse permit compliance, wildlife sweeps, nesting bird restrictions, protected species mitigation, vegetation/weed controls, native habitat restoration, and chance-find stop-work protocols.
  • Manage hazardous substances, storage tanks, secondary containment, WHMIS/TDG requirements, spill/release reporting, CEPA Environmental Emergency and NPRI applicability, waste characterization, waste profiles, manifests, and disposal records.
  • Support water/wastewater compliance, including construction water usage tracking, temporary and permanent meters, fill/flush events, backflow preventer compliance, utility coordination, and temporary equipment discharge requirements.
  • Coordinate specialized consultants and subcontractors for environmental monitoring, hazardous building materials, demolition/abatement, sampling, laboratory analysis, waste disposal, well abandonment, wildlife, wetlands, historical resources, and restoration.
  • Ensure timely escalation, reporting, investigation, and closeout of environmental incidents, permit deviations, complaints, non-conformances, owner inspection findings, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific environmental management plans, procedures, and controls throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assess environmental risks and project impacts, develop mitigation strategies, and monitor the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to identify environmental concerns, verify implementation of environmental controls, and document findings using company systems and reporting tools.
  • Review and interpret environmental assessments, hazardous materials reports, permits, and regulatory requirements, and provide technical guidance to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Advise project leadership and construction teams on environmental obligations, potential impacts, and practical measures to minimize environmental risk and ensure compliance.
  • Deliver environmental training and awareness programs for project personnel, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to support consistent implementation of environmental requirements.
  • Investigate environmental incidents, non-conformances, and compliance issues, and coordinate appropriate response and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and communicate environmental performance reports, compliance metrics, regulatory submissions, and other project-related environmental documentation.
  • Manage environmental consultants, laboratories, waste management providers, and other environmental service vendors as required.
  • Manage and mentor environmental staff as required, support recruitment and onboarding activities, and contribute to employee development and performance management.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
