About The Position
This is an internal promotional opportunity only. Only current DOH employees will be considered. This is a highly professional position responsible for the programmatic oversight of operations of the Biomedical Waste, Tattoo, Body Piercing, Migrant Labor, Food and Waterborne Illness, Indoor Air, Healthy Beaches, Food, Group Care, Mobile Home Park, Limited Use, Rabies, and Sanitary Nuisance programs within Hillsborough County. Qualified candidates will possess a broad and deep knowledge of these Environmental Health programs, demonstrate a proven track record of success, and possess the ability to work effectively in a variety of roles. Responsibilities include performance management of staff supervised, achievement of programmatic requirements and quotas, and support of the Environmental Health team in achieving the Mission and Vision of our department. This position ensures all employees conduct professional, consistent, uniform, and thorough inspections and adhere to all department policies and procedures as described in Department of Health manuals, including DOHM 150-4. Collaborates closely with other Environmental Health supervisors in establishing common goals, methods, and action plans for accomplishing the needs of the department. Ensures regulated facilities are inspected to the best of our ability using all available resources, to meet the requirements of our programs and the needs of the community we serve. Provides formal and informal performance management on a regular basis with staff supervised to discuss current performance and potential development opportunities. Mentor them to achieve success in their career in Environmental Health. Actively participates in DOH-Hillsborough Councils, Committees, Workgroups, or Teams, to support our Public Health mission. Utilize your strengths and build your capabilities. Provides exceptional customer service and accurate and timely information to all requesting assistance, including both internal and external customers. Develops, maintains, and monitors operating budgets and ensures analysis of fee collections and expenses.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a Physical or Biological Science from an accredited college or university with no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of major course work in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a Physical or Biological Science. - Current Food certification to perform Food Hygiene inspections for the Florida Department of Health. (F.S. 381)
- Four years of experience in Environmental Health inspection programs.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
- Knowledge of public health principles.
- Knowledge of data collection and analysis principles and procedures.
- Skill in performing Environmental Health inspections.
- Skill in providing excellent customer service.
- Skill in analyzing data and determining trends.
- Ability to effectively manage people and programs.
- Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific or technical data.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare technical reports.
- Ability to use personal computers.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.
- Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments, and effectively manage time.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
- Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.
Nice To Haves
- Certification as a Registered Sanitarian or Environmental Health Professional by Florida Environmental Health Association or National Environmental Health Association. (Must be uploaded with application.)
- At least two years of supervisory experience within DOH
- Experience with budget management
- Master of Public Health degree (MPH)
- Completion of a formal leadership development training program
