The Chemist performs chemical analyses of various types of hazardous and non-hazardous waste to determine compliant treatment and disposal, using a variety of analytical techniques and instruments. This role involves performing preparation techniques and instrumental analysis of environmental samples for the determination of organic and inorganic constituents using approved EPA test methods and Republic Services Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Work Instructions (WI). The position also includes participation in the generation of SOPs and Work Instructions (WI) under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, preparing samples for laboratory equipment, and utilizing essential functions for instrument sequencing and data processing. This includes performing basic instrument maintenance and repairs, preparing analytical standards, and maintaining accurate documentation. The Chemist validates methods for testing the content of organics and inorganics using a wide variety of processes and instrumentation, performs Initial Demonstration of Capability (IDOC) prior to data reporting, and maintains an annual Demonstration of Capability (DOC) for each method. Responsibilities also include identifying chemical content of materials, researching appropriate treatment studies, providing technical knowledge to develop formulas and enhance processes, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and staying familiar with quality control measures and calculations.
