Environmental Intern - Noise & Acoustics

Westwood Professional ServicesEnglewood, CO
Onsite

About The Position

The Environmental Noise & Acoustics Intern will join an environmental services team assessing sound impacts from utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Projects range from pre-construction ambient noise surveys and turbine or inverter noise modeling to post-construction compliance monitoring for renewable energy developers, IPPs, and utility clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply acoustics and environmental science coursework to real-world renewable energy siting and permitting work. As an Environmental Noise & Acoustics Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards, including ANSI, IEC, and state and local noise ordinances, in the preparation of noise impact assessments and will assist Senior Acousticians in field data collection, acoustic modeling, and the preparation of technical reports supporting permitting and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Acoustics, Physics, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and project team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion, including early morning or overnight monitoring windows.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant industry experience through coursework, research projects, or prior internships in acoustics, environmental noise assessment, or renewable energy permitting.
  • Experience with acoustic modeling software with sound level meters and noise monitoring equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field collection of ambient and operational sound level data using calibrated sound level meters and noise loggers at project sites.
  • Support development of noise propagation models for wind turbines, solar inverters, and battery energy storage equipment using acoustic modeling software.
  • Help prepare noise impact assessment reports and permitting exhibits documenting predicted sound levels at nearby receptors.
  • Assist in reviewing project layouts and equipment specifications to identify potential noise mitigation measures.
  • Support post-construction noise compliance monitoring and comparison of measured results against permit conditions and ordinance limits.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to install, calibrate, and retrieve monitoring equipment and interface directly with clients.
