About The Position

xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence, operating with a flat organizational structure where all employees are expected to be hands-on and contribute directly. Leadership is earned through initiative and consistent excellence, with strong work ethic, prioritization, and communication skills being essential. As part of the xAI EHS Team, the Environmental Health & Safety Engineer will provide timely, clear, and high-quality technical expertise and assist in the implementation of all environmental, health, and safety programs for the construction, expansion, and operation of xAI’s advanced AI infrastructure and large-scale compute facilities. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in both environmental and occupational safety, hands-on, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment, working as a tightly integrated team member to support other programs and ensure the overall success of xAI’s mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and operational oversight of environmental, health, and safety programs, ideally in high-tech manufacturing, data centers, or industrial construction environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's and/or Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or aerospace) with emphasis on occupational health and safety.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification.
  • Knowledge of process safety management, high-power electrical systems, liquid cooling infrastructure, and chemical delivery systems common in large-scale compute facilities.
  • Strong knowledge and experience interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.

  • Collaborate with department leadership, engineering teams, and facility managers to complete job hazard assessments and implement robust health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards and develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety standards are not met.
  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the EPA, CERCLA, RCRA, DOT, and other environmental and transportation agencies.
  • Work closely with AI hardware engineers, construction teams, and operations technicians to perform detailed safety reviews of complex operations involving high-power systems, cooling infrastructure, and hazardous materials to ensure safe execution.
  • Lead or assist in all aspects of incident investigations, including initial response, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and closure.
  • Implement and develop safety and health programs, including but not limited to: OSHA general industry and construction standards; HAZCOM, hazmat handling, cryogenics, high-pressure and high-voltage systems; Confined space, fall protection, lock-out/tag-out, and electrical safety.
  • Develop practical safety solutions to resolve EHS hazards/concerns within cost and schedule constraints, following the safety hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE) to keep risks to personnel, property, and the environment within acceptable boundaries.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure full regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, chemical spills, power events, etc.).
