About The Position

The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Leader is a key member of the Natural Leadership Team (NLT) and is responsible for leading safety and environmental performance across the Irving Roofing and Asphalt plants. This role provides technical expertise, visible floor leadership, coaching, and accountability while winning the hearts and minds of employees to help create a zero-injury culture and strong environmental stewardship. The successful candidate will influence employees and leaders at all levels, own EHS systems and compliance requirements, and drive sustainable improvement through clear priorities, disciplined follow-through, and proactive communication. Span of control: Two hourly direct reports and one EHS Development professional. This role has significant influence across internal plant teams, corporate partners, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.

Requirements

Strong working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety compliance law and industrial hygiene
Leads through influence, credibility, and visible engagement to drive safety and environmental ownership across the plant
Ability to identify hazards, critical process, and system needs and implement appropriate action plans
Ability to establish agreement and consensus with management
Ability to initiate and lead cross-functional teams and management committees to achieve objectives
Adept at developing and delivering safety training
Skillful in driving and managing change
Ability to integrate resources across the organization
Achieves results, individually and through teams
Makes sound decisions that balance risk reduction, compliance, operational needs, and long-term sustainability.
Demonstrates strategic planning and thinking
Utilize Microsoft Office tools, SAP, and site-required EHS systems.
Undergraduate degree required; preferred in any field related to EH&S, such as industrial hygiene, engineering, science, or equivalent.
6 years of progressive safety experience
3 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment preferred
Experience in leading, assessing, and developing talent to deliver results

Nice To Haves

Experience with Dakota EHS and Benchmark software programs, preferred.
Professional certification as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), strongly preferred
Experience with Texas-specific environmental and safety regulations strongly preferred

Responsibilities

Lead plant safety culture through visible floor presence, coaching, and consistent reinforcement of standards.
Lead site efforts to reduce the plant’s environmental footprint in alignment with corporate sustainability strategy and community stewardship expectations.
Support wellness efforts that improve employee health, engagement, and safety performance.
Advise and guide the Natural Leadership Team (NLT) in developing a risk-ranked strategic plan, prioritize and advocate capital/resource requests, and advise the leadership team on all aspects of environmental requirements and responsibilities.
Own and communicate plant safety metrics, including RIR, first aids, near misses, and Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) indicators.
Own and communicate plant environmental metrics, compliance status, and improvement priorities.
Develop capability, accountability, and follow-through in the plant.
Coach, mentor, and redirect plant personnel to strengthen safety leadership and ownership.
Set clear expectations, priorities, and follow-up routines for direct reports and safety teams.
Maintain a leadership presence on the plant floor, influence employee and supervisory behaviors, and fully engage employees in the safety process.
Assess effectiveness of plant leadership from an EH&S perspective and provide developmental guidance as required.
Develop safety programs and incident tracking systems to drive insights on injury prevention and ways to engineer out safety risk.
Lead a safety committee of plant employees to create a safe and environmentally conscious workforce.
Manage workers’ compensation claims by coordinating injury reporting, case follow-up, return-to-work activities, and communication with employees, leaders, HR, medical providers, and claims partners.
Provide proactive updates on EHS risks, training status, corrective actions, and upcoming compliance needs.
Lead Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) EHS Pillar in support of the overall plant strategy.
Own the site EHS training plan, schedule, completion tracking, and escalation of overdue requirements.
Coordinate workplace injury communication, case management support, and follow-up with the appropriate partners.
Develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of all critical EH&S processes, programs, and procedures.
Set, track, and deliver key EHS metrics and action plans that drive continuous improvement.
Ensure regulatory compliance of all environmental permits and processes.
Build effective relationships with regulatory agencies and internal partners to support compliance and continuous improvement.
Create, maintain, and execute the compliance calendar with clear owners, due dates, and escalation for missed commitments.
Effectively address enforcement actions from local, state, or federal agencies.
Provide expert technical support in identifying and resolving critical regulatory issues.
Ensure adherence to corporate policies and programs.
Maintain required corporate EHS management systems and ensure timely completion of assigned actions.
Drive timely closure and effectiveness verification for audit findings, incidents, inspections, and corrective actions.
Use data, risk assessment, and knowledge of plant operations to influence sound business decisions that protect people, the environment, and the operation.
