About The Position

This role will provide strategic leadership for Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) performance, compliance, and risk management across a global business area. Lead the development and execution of innovative EHS programs that prevent significant incidents, strengthen regulatory compliance, and foster a culture of safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement. Partner with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to integrate EHS into business strategy, operational decision-making, and daily activities. Build organizational capability by developing and mentoring site and above-site EHS professionals. Lead a global team of direct and indirect EHS professionals while driving operational excellence, effective risk mitigation, and consistent EHS performance across all supported locations. Responsible for staffing, mentoring, developing above site and site EHS professionals to ensure compliance. Provide functional EHS guidance to AbbVie organizations that are day to day supported by manufacturing site EHS leads and respective staff. Develop programs and systems to prevent catastrophic safety and environmental events from occurring.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, environmental, occupational safety, or Industrial hygiene is required, and a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • 15 years of EHS experience with a minimum of 10 years supervisory /managerial experience is required.
  • Extensive technical expertise in EHS, with site level experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience leading staff of senior-level EHS professionals is required.
  • International experience and ability to travel globally as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong team leadership experience involving cross-functional participants.
  • A positive track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external clients and customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence and negotiate with senior management, peers, customers, regulators, and governmental officials.
  • Must have experience managing budgets and other financial responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • A recognized leader in EHS with strong technical skills and strong interpersonal skills, as well as extensive international experience. Needs to understand regional and global business drivers and regulations.
  • High level negotiations with external EHS regulatory agencies throughout the world.
  • Keeping current on emerging technologies and regulatory issues that have the potential to impact the business.
  • Experience working in a matrix organization to actively partner with Operations and/or business support functions personnel to ensure regulatory compliance, and consistent, effective EHS program implementation throughout global operations.
  • Contribute to the global EHS vision and Long-Range Plan (LRP) strategy for global function.
  • Developing and maintaining EHS standards, policies, systems, and methods for EHS related activities.
  • Regulatory strategies to minimize liability, support business growth, and enhance operational flexibility.
  • Collaborate with EHS leaders to understand trends, issues, and implications to the business. Collaborate closely with the AbbVie corporate EHS resources on all issues related to global EHS.
  • Position is responsible for all compliance at a Country, Federal, State, and local EHS compliance related to safety, environmental, industrial hygiene, emergency response, moving to zero EHS impacts, incident investigation, EHS training, high level presentations, etc.
