About The Position

The Environmental Graphic Designer (EGD) Senior will be responsible for maintaining a variety of maps, signs, and directories across all campuses and innovation zones. This role involves close collaboration with clients to conceptualize, prepare, and design diverse two and three-dimensional graphics, maps, and signs. These designs will serve to identify, direct, inform, interpret, and visually enhance the campus environment using computer-assisted technology and industry-standard materials. The EGD will support strict identity standards and policies, working collaboratively with university leadership, project teams, consultants, contractors, and campus stakeholders to develop, implement, and maintain environmental graphic design, ensure accessibility compliance, manage code-related signage, and oversee signage planning and project implementation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • This classification requires a current Class D Arizona driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of project management, process improvement and organizational workflow development.
  • Knowledge of accessibility, life safety, and building code signage requirements.
  • Knowledge of signage standards, fabrication methods, materials and installation practices.
  • Knowledge of wayfinding systems and user centered design principles.
  • Knowledge of fabrication requirements/ process and computer-generated signage programs.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication, presentation development, editing and proofreading.
  • Skill in coordinating multiple stakeholders and resolving complex project issues.
  • Skill in the utilization of computerized signage planning and design software.
  • Ability to conceptualize needs, evaluate alternatives, estimate costs, and communicate university requirements.
  • Ability to work from construction documents, hand drawings, and digital files.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to be accurate while meeting time constraints and budget limitations.
  • Ability to design within established university graphic standards guidelines.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, Visual Arts or related field such as English, Journalism, Marketing, Psychology, Advertising or Public Relations AND three years’ experience in Architectural Signage, Environmental Graphic Design, Graphic Design or Industrial Design; OR, Seven years’ experience in Architectural Signage, Environmental Graphic Design, Graphic Design or Industrial Design; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and governs university environmental graphic design standards, signage guidelines, fabrication details, and implementation procedures to ensure consistency across all campuses.
  • Works closely with project teams, consultants, contractors, accessibility services, environmental health and safety, fire marshal, facilities management, enterprise marketing, and other stakeholders to coordinate signage requirements and resolve complex design, accessibility, and code compliance issues.
  • Reviews construction documents, signage packages, location plans, message schedules, and fabrication details for compliance with university standards, accessibility requirements, building codes, and project objectives.
  • Develops cost estimates, project scopes, implementation strategies, and resource planning tools to support project budgeting and delivery.
  • Provides oversight and compliance for environmental graphics, signs, maps, directories, digital wayfinding systems, banners, murals, and related visual communication elements supporting campus identity and navigation.
  • Prepares presentations, visualizations, reports, recommendations, and supporting documentation for leadership review and decision making.
  • Prepares cost estimates including design, production, fabrication, and installation; maintains accurate records of work in progress for billing and department records.
  • Prepares photo visualizations and mockups of proposed signage for placement, content, and/or usage.
  • Proofs for consistency and adherence to established printing and quality standards/specifications.
  • Creates and prepares floorplans to determine placement.
  • Conducts construction drawing reviews.
  • Coordinates and leads the work of others.
