About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking to hire Environmental Engineering Interns for the Stormwater Permitting section. This role involves reviewing construction plans for compliance with stormwater management rules and regulations, inspecting sites for compliance, and responding to public complaints. The interns will work under supervision to ensure that projects adhere to stormwater pollution prevention plans and post-construction stormwater management practices. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to DEP's mission of protecting public health and the environment by managing stormwater runoff and reducing pollution.

Requirements

  • Proof of filing and passing the recent DCAS Civil Service Exam for Environmental Engineering Intern.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and drawings.
  • Understanding of the requirements of the SWPPP.
  • Understanding of applicable rules and codes.
  • Ability to complete calculations to check designs.
  • Ability to review applications for compliance with rules.
  • Ability to inspect construction sites for compliance with approved plans.
  • Ability to inspect stormwater management practices (SMPs) for compliance with permit.
  • A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; OR A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.

Responsibilities

  • Review construction plans for compliance with rules and regulations for the management of stormwater from construction sites.
  • Review maintenance of post-construction stormwater management practices (SMPs).
  • Inspect sites for compliance with approved plans and in response to public complaints.
  • Read and understand documents, drawings, and supporting calculations to determine compliance.
  • Inspect sites before, during, and after construction.
  • Read design plans and locate proposed practices in the field.
  • Witness soil testing for compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Review plans, calculations, and supporting documentation for stormwater pollution prevention plans.
  • Inspect stormwater management practices (SMPs) for compliance with permit.
  • Communicate questions and concerns on applications and inspections.
