Environmental Engineer

LLNL•Livermore, CA

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring an Environmental Engineer in the CERCLA Program of the Environmental Restoration Department. The role provides engineering support for planning, designing, testing, compliance monitoring, and operating and maintaining groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems at LLNL’s Livermore Site 200 and Site 300 in Tracy, California. The work requires full-time on-site presence. The position may be filled at either of two levels, with additional responsibilities assigned at the higher level. The engineer applies environmental engineering knowledge to remediation activities; independently develops and improves cost-effective remediation-system designs; monitors and optimizes treatment-system operations; and plans and conducts field experiments to develop, demonstrate, and validate remediation technologies. The role also supports operations, design, and construction of new and existing systems, prepares and reviews technical and regulatory documentation, keeps current on environmental policy and technology, and collaborates across organizational lines. At the TSS.3 level, the role includes advanced engineering design of groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems, participation in implementing new systems and modifying existing ones, and leading engineering design reviews. The position requires eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. The laboratory may require work in Limited Areas where personal and laboratory wireless devices are restricted. Employees assigned to Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever. External applicants selected for the role must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for this clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of and relevant experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of environmental remediation systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and relevant experience in environmental restoration technical areas, including groundwater and soil remediation systems, pressure and flow calculations, environmental chemistry, and treatability tests.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles with ingenuity and creativity to solve moderate to complex technical problems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of California and federal regulations and requirements related to remediation activities.
  • Proficiency with standard office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and ability to work effectively on PC and Mac platforms.
  • Ability to independently conduct research, analyze results, and prepare clear technical documentation.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with team members and external parties, collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, and prepare, present, document, and explain technical information.
  • At the TSS.3 level, advanced knowledge and significant experience in environmental remediation and in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of groundwater and soil remediation systems and components, including extraction and injection wellhead design, pump specifications, treatment media and vessels, pipelines, and associated instrumentation.
  • At the TSS.3 level, advanced knowledge and significant experience with engineering standards, practices, and processes; generating requirements and design documents; configuration control; preparing test plans and user documentation; and formal and informal design reviews.
  • At the TSS.3 level, advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact with the scientific community, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders; collaborate in multidisciplinary teams; present and explain technical information; and advise management.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience designing, operating, and maintaining Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) and related technology for remote data acquisition and device control.
  • Experience operating and maintaining Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for displaying remote-location schematics, alarms, trends, reports, and device controls.
  • Experience designing, operating, and maintaining groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems for multiple co-mingled contaminants, including volatile organic compounds, high-explosive compounds, perchlorate, nitrate, and uranium.

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental engineering support for remediation activities at LLNL.
  • Independently design, test, and improve cost-effective groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems, ensuring compliance with DOE, federal, and state regulations and safety requirements.
  • Monitor treatment-system operations and identify opportunities to optimize performance, adopt improved technologies, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and lower lifecycle costs.
  • Plan and conduct field experiments to develop, adapt, demonstrate, and validate environmental remediation technologies.
  • Coordinate and support operation, design, and construction activities for existing and new remediation systems.
  • Prepare and review technical and regulatory documents and ensure compliance with federal and state requirements and LLNL environmental policies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of environmental policies, technologies, and the scientific and technical aspects of regulatory requirements affecting cleanup operations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, mid-level managers, and other team members on work requiring coordination across organizational lines.
  • At the TSS.3 level, perform advanced engineering design of groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems and participate in implementation of new systems and modification of existing systems.
  • At the TSS.3 level, lead engineering design reviews of environmental remediation systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
