Environmental Engineer Intern
About The Position
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons per day of the highest quality drinking water to 8.5 million NYC residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and has a wastewater conveyance and treatment system capable of processing over 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day to protect the environment and the city’s surrounding waterways. The primary responsibilities of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) are: the operation, maintenance and protection of the City’s drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems; the protection of adjacent waterways; and the development and protection of the Department’s Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized contractors. In addition, the Bureau has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects which could impact on the City’s water or sewer systems. The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations is seeking to hire an Environmental Engineer Intern within the Division of Capital Program Management (CPM) for Distribution & Drainage section. The selected candidate will provide engineering support for stormwater management, drainage infrastructure, sewer systems, environmental compliance, and related water quality and resiliency projects. The position will assist senior engineers with: - Collecting, organizing, and analyzing environmental, hydraulic, and infrastructure-related data. - Supporting stormwater management and drainage improvement projects. - Reviewing drainage plans, reports, calculations, and technical documentation. - Performing basic engineering analyses and calculations. - Preparing spreadsheets, maps, figures, presentations, and technical reports. - Using engineering software, databases, GIS applications, and agency data management tools. - Participating in field visits to observe infrastructure conditions, collect information, and support project assessments. - Coordinating with DEP units, consultants, contractors, and other agencies as needed. The position provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in environmental engineering, stormwater management, drainage systems, and infrastructure planning while working under the guidance of experienced engineers.
Requirements
- A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.

Responsibilities
- Provide engineering support for stormwater management, drainage infrastructure, sewer systems, environmental compliance, and related water quality and resiliency projects.
- Assist with engineering analyses, data collection and evaluation, preparation of technical reports, review of design documents, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Support the evaluation of drainage and sewer system through field investigations, hydraulic/environmental data review and modeling, GIS mapping, and engineering calculations.
