This is an entry-level position for an Environmental Engineer, Geologist, or Environmental Scientist to join S&ME's Charlotte, North Carolina team. The role focuses on building career experience through hands-on projects, mentorship, and exploring environmental consulting. The role involves a balance of outdoor fieldwork and office responsibilities, supporting environmental consulting projects for public and private sector clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 0-2 years of experience in coursework, internships, or professional work experience related to environmental assessment methods, due diligence processes, regulatory permitting, environmental compliance, or asbestos and hazardous building materials.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable operating in demanding project environments.
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Nice To Haves

  • Field subsurface exploration experience is a plus.
  • Water well installation experience is a plus.
  • Engineer in training (EIT) or Geologist in training (GIT) license, or on track to obtain one, is a plus if the corresponding educational degree was obtained.
  • Enjoys working in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field investigations, environmental monitoring, sample collection, data interpretation, and technical documentation.
  • Support environmental consulting projects for public and private sector clients.
  • Gather environmental samples and site data.
  • Support environmental assessments and investigations.
  • Inspect facilities and infrastructure for regulatory compliance.
  • Document observations and maintain project records.
  • Review environmental data and laboratory results to identify trends, concerns, and potential risks.
  • Prepare reports, maps, permit applications, and other technical documents.
  • Research environmental records and support assessment, permitting, and compliance efforts.
  • Collaborate with clients, regulators, and internal teams to keep projects moving forward.
