We are seeking an Environmental Enforcement Officer who balances technical expertise with a collaborative, restorative approach to environmental protection. In this position, you aren't just enforcing regulations; you are a steward of Vermont's natural resources. You will work across the Agency's regulatory programs, ensuring that our air, land, and water are treated with respect. You'll be the bridge between environmental science and the law, working to find solutions that restore and protect Vermont's beautiful landscape.

Requirements

  • At least one (1) year of experience in a regulatory environmental field, or in a law enforcement or investigatory role
  • Experience with engineering, geology, hydrology, and other technical areas of environmental protection.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience working independently and making autonomous decisions.
  • Ability to stay organized while managing multiple investigations.
  • Experience with investigatory principles and techniques, including interviewing and interrogation techniques
  • Familiarity of rules concerning gathering, analyzing, interpreting and the preservation of evidence and of search and seizure laws.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal statutes, regulations, and policies on environmental protection.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree or higher in an environmental sciences or related field OR a criminal justice/law enforcement field OR completion of a law enforcement academy

Responsibilities

  • Review and prioritize citizen concerns, ensuring the community's voice is heard and acted upon.
  • Use interpersonal skills to negotiate for viable solutions and long-term compliance.
  • Work with environmental program experts to assess damage and prescribe remedial efforts to bring the environment back to a healthy state.
  • Conduct thoughtful, thorough investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses and alleged violators, and produce clear reports that support the legal integrity of our mission.
  • Work alongside a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and legal experts to prepare for court actions and provide meaningful testimony.
