About The Position

An Environmental Compliance technician is needed for a 10-week part-time (20 hrs wk) internship with the CEMML team at U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii and US Army Garrison Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA). The internship will include a rotation with CEMML staff in the different environmental programs in which we provide support to the Directorate of Public Works. This position is part of CEMMLs Early-career Development Program (ECDP) which bridges academic training and professional practice by providing hands‑on, mentored internships and early‑career positions supporting federal lands management. Potential work activities may include but are not limited to: Hazardous material/waste inspections, Natural and Cultural resources field work, Construction site, storm drain, transformer, drinking water, lead paint/asbestos inspections, NEPA and GIS support. This position is onsite, and the technician must have reliable transportation to the site. The ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing stipends.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field (at least a sophomore standing).
  • At least 3 months and no more than 3 years of relevant experience, which may include internships, fieldwork, seasonal jobs, volunteer work, or applied coursework.
  • Basic field data collection skills (e.g. Vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS-based mapping; academic or field school experience would count)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
  • Must possess a Real ID or passport.
  • Must be able to work long hours independently in remote, rugged field conditions under harsh weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field.
  • Familiar with the basic principles of the NHPA and Section 106 compliance
  • Experience conducting research and compiling background information.
  • Experience organizing and planning historical/archival/archaeological research projects.
  • Experience inventorying and assessing cultural properties
  • Prior experience photographing archaeological sites/properties or historic buildings and structures.
  • Experience with cultural resources database entry (e.g. tDAR).
  • Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data and/or familiarity with GIS software (e.g ArcGIS Pro)
