About The Position

Hims & Hers is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist to serve as the on-site environmental compliance lead at our Menlo Park, California-based facility. Reporting to senior corporate environmental leadership, this is a hands-on, high-ownership role responsible for day-to-day execution across a broad portfolio of environmental programs including hazardous waste, Hazardous Materials Business Plans (HMBPs), air quality, industrial wastewater, stormwater, and California-specific regulatory requirements while operating with a high degree of daily independence. As directed by senior leadership, this role may also support multi-site compliance reviews, environmental due diligence assessments, and portfolio-level compliance projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Chemistry, and at least 5 years of hands-on environmental compliance experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own and manage site-level environmental programs in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, compounding pharmacy, peptide or fine chemical manufacturing, medical device, contract research, or laboratory environment.
  • Proven experience as the primary environmental compliance lead at a regulated facility, including direct regulatory agency interaction, multi-program compliance calendar management, and independent permit and reporting submittal preparation.
  • Strong working knowledge of RCRA/DTSC, air quality, industrial wastewater, stormwater, and California-specific programs including CalARP, SB-14, CARB, and the California Unified Program; demonstrated familiarity with CERS, DTSC, CUPAs, AQMDs, regional water boards, and local sewer authorities.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple programs and regulatory obligations with minimal day-to-day supervision; strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with regulatory inspectors, vendors, operations teams, site employees, and senior site leadership.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) strongly preferred; Qualified SWPPP Developer/Practitioner (QSD/QSP), CESCO, or OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER also valued.
  • Direct experience with CalARP, SB-14, CARB refrigerant management, CARB LSI/forklift regulations, SWRCB IGP/SMARTS, and local AQMD permitting.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, compounding pharmacy, peptide manufacturing, or chemical processing environments; familiarity with TSCA chemical use restrictions and workplace chemical protection programs.
  • Experience supporting multi-site compliance reviews, environmental due diligence assessments, or compliance gap and corrective action programs.
  • Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001), compliance auditing, and experience in occupational health, safety programs, or combined EHS roles in regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and safety programs (OSHA, Cal/OSHA) and familiarity with pharmaceutical compounding environments and USP standards is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and submit environmental reports, permit applications, notifications, and compliance documentation on schedule, including submittments through CERS, SMARTS, and other regulatory portals; maintain compliance calendars covering hazardous waste, air quality, wastewater, stormwater, Tier II, California Accidental Release Prevention Program (CalARP), and the CA Hazardous Waste Source Reduction and Management Review Act (CA SB-14).
  • Support preparation, renewal, and modification of environmental permits; assist in responding to regulatory agency inquiries, NOVs, and information requests; support corrective action tracking and closure.
  • Evaluate program applicability as operations or processes change, including assessments under CARB, DTSC, SWRCB, local AQMD, and CUPA requirements.
  • Manage hazardous waste accumulation areas, labeling, storage, inspections, and shipment coordination in compliance with RCRA and California DTSC requirements; complete and maintain manifests, LDR notifications, and certificates of disposal.
  • Coordinate day-to-day activities with hazardous waste disposal vendors, including pickup scheduling, shipment tracking, and documentation; monitor vendor performance and escalate compliance concerns or relationship issues to senior leadership.
  • Support waste characterization, source reduction initiatives, and preparation of California SB-14 Source Reduction Plans and Performance Reports in coordination with the Senior Manager.
  • Maintain and update the facility’s Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP) via CERS, including accurate chemical inventory reporting, SDS management, and Proposition 65 occupational warning compliance; support CalARP program applicability evaluations and documentation as needed.
  • Support air permit compliance with the local AQMD, including tracking permit conditions, maintaining emissions records and equipment inventories, and coordinating stack testing and monitoring with outside testing firms; assist with CARB refrigerant management program (RMP) registration, leak detection recordkeeping, and reporting as appropriate.
  • Assist with CARB LSI fleet emissions compliance and support planning related to the Zero Emission Forklift Regulation.
  • Support industrial wastewater discharge permit compliance, including coordinating sampling, monitoring, and reporting to local sewer authorities (POTWs); evaluate applicability of federal categorical pretreatment standards.
  • Implement and maintain the facility Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) under California’s Industrial General Permit (IGP); conduct routine stormwater inspections, coordinate sampling with environmental laboratories, manage chain of custody and data review, and support annual SMARTS reporting and NEC evaluations.
  • Support regulatory inspections and agency visits by DTSC, CUPAs, AQMDs, regional water boards, and local sewer authorities by coordinating walkthroughs, assembling documentation, and facilitating on-site logistics; handle routine day-to-day regulatory correspondence and escalate substantive agency interactions to senior leadership.
  • Support third-party audits and internal compliance assessments; track and close Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) from audits, inspections, and incidents; maintain inspection-ready records at all times.
  • Maintain spill prevention and response programs, support incident investigations and root cause analysis, ensure timely regulatory notifications, and support emergency preparedness planning and drills.
  • Support waste reduction, recycling, and pollution prevention initiatives; track environmental performance metrics and contribute to continuous improvement efforts aligned with company sustainability goals.
  • Support development and delivery of environmental compliance training (hazardous waste, HMBP, stormwater, wastewater, air, Prop 65, spill prevention); maintain training records and communicate regulatory updates to operations and manufacturing personnel.
  • Ensure all environmental training for onsite employees is current and documented.
