This is an internal recruitment for Maryland Department of the Environment employees. The core responsibilities for the Environmental Compliance Specialist IV position, which serves as the Lead Hazardous Materials Specialist, are to act as a lead technical expert, assist with training new and current staff, and ensure compliance with Maryland state regulations and federal requirements at hazardous materials transportation facilities and during en-route shipments. This includes providing response, professional technical assistance, compliance solutions, and oversight for the remediation of transportation-related incidents involving the release or threat of release of regulated substances. The working conditions involve working outside in all weather conditions, including exposure to hazardous conditions such as working roadside next to moving traffic, alongside law enforcement during traffic stops, potential exposure to hazardous materials, vehicle exhaust, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Physical demands include lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing into, onto, and under commercial vehicles, and lifting, carrying, and operating spill mitigation equipment, and donning personal protective equipment such as coveralls, ballistic protection, safety boots, eye protection, gloves, and potentially respiratory protection and chemical protective suits. The selected candidate will perform field duties throughout Baltimore City and surrounding Maryland counties. A valid driver’s license with no more than five points is required.
