About The Position

Union Sanitary District (USD) is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Environmental Compliance (EC) Inspector I to help protect water quality and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. This is an exciting opportunity to work in the field and the lab, collecting wastewater samples, inspecting industrial and commercial facilities, and supporting pollution prevention programs. Your work will directly support cleaner waterways and healthier communities. The EC Inspector I performs inspections, investigations, and sampling of wastewater and stormwater discharges to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local pretreatment and pollution prevention regulations. This is an entry-level position in the EC Inspector career series, providing foundational knowledge and experience. As part of a collaborative team, you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills, work outdoors, interact with local businesses, and support meaningful environmental programs.

Requirements

  • Two years of college with coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field, OR High school with at least one year of equivalent experience in wastewater treatment, environmental inspection, or laboratory analysis
  • Knowledge of basic principles of chemistry and chemical analysis
  • Basic laboratory procedures, equipment and apparatus
  • Basic arithmetic, including fractions, decimals, proportions, and metric measures
  • Basic mechanical principles
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and insurable by the District
  • Must be physically capable of performing critical duties, including climbing ladders and lifting 50 pounds.
  • A willingness to work under adverse weather conditions, complete overtime as required, and use respiratory protection equipment is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections, investigations, and sampling of wastewater and stormwater discharges to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local pretreatment and pollution prevention regulations.
  • Collects samples.

  • Responds to callouts.
  • Investigates waste discharges.
  • Works closely with customers.
  • Drives a motor vehicle.
  • Performs a variety of duties essential to maintaining environmental compliance.
