About The Position

The Battery Network is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and enthusiastic Environmental Compliance and Safety Manager to develop and implement best practices, manage audit processes, enhance internal and external facing safety content, and build solutions that help the organization meet and maintain its safety and compliance objectives. The Environmental Compliance and Safety Manager is responsible for actively monitoring, taking ownership of, and ensuring full organizational integration of both operational and regulatory changes. The role serves as a practical leader for battery safety throughout the full lifecycle of use, handling, transportation and recycling. A successful individual in this role will be active in industry discussions, engage on-site with our vendor community, and collaborate with The Battery Network’s Product Portfolio leader to implement safety solutions to meet our customers’ needs. Reporting to the Director, Operations, the ideal candidate is a self-starter that brings excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative, small-sized team environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, safety, or compliance-related field, field of scientific study, OR at least four (4) years of equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • Four (4) years of related experience is strongly preferred (in addition to having a degree or 4+ years of direct experience).
  • Ability to independently research, synthesize, and apply complex regulatory frameworks is a core requirement.
  • Ability to distill and explain complex regulatory language as well as battery safety in layman’s terms.
  • Experience interfacing with federal and/or state regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and perform site inspections and audits (i.e. environmental, packaging/shipping compliance) of recycling partner locations in accordance with organization standards.
  • Maintain positive relationships with the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT), US Environmental Protection Agency and other regulatory audiences.
  • Serve as a liaison, expert resource, and point of contact for governmental contacts, customers, strategic partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor laws and regulations that might affect The Battery Network’s policies or practices, including those that may have impact on our collection sites, customers and partners.
  • Manage and lead the compliance and safety support for the organization, which may include travel and hands-on work with our network of partners.
  • Lead The Battery Network’s organization and documentation of best-in-class safety and auditing practices.
  • Benchmark, monitor, and train The Battery Network’s internal and external supply chain on safety and compliance practices, with a specific focus on the safe handling, sorting, storage and shipping of batteries.
  • Develop guideline documents and other materials intended to document safety and compliance programs.
  • Conduct internal and external training programs to provide education on compliance/safety requirements and best practices.
  • Maintain strong familiarity with and influence the safety and compliance of the organization’s end-to-end operations.
  • Advise account management and other organizational functions on the proper collection, handling, and transportation of material, including potentially hazardous material.
  • Participate in the development of a range of strategies, policies, and plans that affect the organization and its stakeholders.
  • Lead the organization’s efforts to obtain and maintain critical certifications, particularly ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and downstream vendor due diligence.
  • Serve as a group leader for the Quality Management (QMS) Team, working to understand, balance, educate, and leverage the cross-functional team of voluntary quality ambassadors from throughout the organization.
