About The Position

WSP is seeking an Environmental Acoustics and Permitting Consultant for their New York, NY or Valhalla, NY offices. This role involves providing technical assistance and guidance on acoustics (noise/vibration) and environmental permitting projects, with a primary focus on acoustics (approximately 70%) and secondary support for broader permitting and multidisciplinary environmental tasks (approximately 30%). The consultant will be responsible for producing accurate and concise technical deliverables, ensuring quality standards are met, and collaborating with senior staff and multidisciplinary teams. The role requires taking ownership of tasks, independently resolving routine ambiguities, and escalating significant issues. The work is expected to be both office and field-based.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Acoustics, Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, Architectural), Physics, or Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Approximately 5 years of relevant consulting / project delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering or supporting noise and/or vibration work (e.g., modelling, analysis, reporting, mitigation evaluation, and/or interpretation of field data).
  • Experience producing accurate and concise documentation and technical reports; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to progress tasks independently with guidance, collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and seeking clarification early when needed.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and ArcGIS.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's in Master’s degree in Acoustics/Acoustical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Environmental Engineering/Science or a related discipline.
  • Engineer-In-Training certification.
  • Experience with CadnaA and/or other environmental acoustics modelling tools.
  • Experience undertaking underwater noise impact assessments and/or field measurements, including interpretation of results to support environmental permitting and regulatory submissions.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and ArcGIS.

Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of terrestrial noise and vibration assessments for power generation, power transmission, substations, and other linear energy infrastructure projects, including both construction and operational evaluations.
  • Conduct and document noise and vibration field surveys/monitoring, including data collection and interpretation to support project reporting and permitting deliverables.
  • Undertake predictive noise modelling for complex energy and infrastructure projects using CadnaA (preferred) or equivalent software, including development of robust model inputs, calibration assumptions, mitigation testing, and interpretation of results against applicable criteria and local/state requirements.
  • Support the preparation of clear, technically sound reports and client-ready deliverables, including noise impact assessments, construction noise analyses, technical memoranda, and supporting documentation for environmental permitting and regulatory submissions.
  • Review and interpret field data and background information; develop conclusions and practical recommendations to support project teams and clients.
  • Support preparation of proposals and scope/budget development by defining technical approach, level of effort, program assumptions, and key project risks for acoustic and vibration workstreams.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance for environmental permitting and impact assessment assignments, supporting the development of documentation and inputs needed for regulatory submissions and project delivery.
  • Support office activities such as technical evaluations, coordination support, and preparation/review of project documentation and technical reports.
  • Support field activities as needed (depending on assignments), which may include data collection, environmental sampling support, and/or construction-related documentation and observation.
