About The Position

The Environment, Safety, and Health Representative (ESHR) is a deployed member of the Safety and Health Services Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Environment, Safety, and Health Directorate. The position supports Fundamental Interactions and Particles, Innovation, Science & Security, Environment, Safety & Health, Computing and Data Sciences, and the Balance of Plant, serving as an advocate and technical resource on environmental, health, and safety matters. The role partners with line management, scientific researchers, employees at all levels, and trade unions. This hands-on position involves fieldwork in chemical, biological, physical science, and nanomaterials laboratories; construction sites; infrastructure and maintenance physical plants; and areas housing large experimental equipment. The representative identifies hazards, evaluates exposures, develops controls, prepares training materials and procedures, delivers briefings and classes, advises on regulatory compliance, conducts inspections, tracks corrective actions, and reviews projects, work plans, construction, experiments, fabrication, and operations. The role uses equipment to inspect, test, monitor, and measure environmental and safety hazards. Work locations may also include clinical facilities, roofs, and areas in or near chemical, radiological, biological, or hazardous-material work. The ESHR provides technical resources for general safety reviews, industrial hygiene monitoring, environmental compliance oversight—with particular attention to RCRA and other regulated laboratory wastes—and chemical hazard awareness for hazardous and flammable chemicals. The position is fully onsite at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be required to respond to emergency or non-emergency situations. The salary range is $100,000–$120,000 per year, with offers based on qualifications, education, experience, and internal peer-group considerations. Employment is contingent on obtaining and maintaining a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) credential.
