About The Position

The Department of Pathology is excited to recruit a full-time (1.0 FTE) entry-level Histotechnologist at the rank of Healthcare Entry Professional. The entry-level histotechnologist will process whole mount prostate, prostate mapping biopsies, and other types of specimens received in the Histology Subspeciality Laboratory. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to: Key Responsibilities:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, nutrition, nursing, health, human services, psychology, counseling, social work, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Histotechnician or Histotechnologist Certification (HT, HTL, ASCP), or eligible for certification. If eligible, but uncertified, certification must be obtained within 2 year of hire date.
  • A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Enroll in and maintain Histology Certification through ASCP’s Certification Maintenance Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Immunohistochemistry Certification (QIHC, ASCP).
  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as complex machinery and staining systems.
  • Experience calculating lab results and data using math and analytical skills.
  • Experience with developing reports, spreadsheets and databases using Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience entering data into an electronic information system.
  • Experience purchasing and maintaining lab supplies.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining laboratories and lab equipment.
  • Experience working within an educational medical lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Gross description and dissection of whole prostate specimens, prostate mapping biopsy specimens.
  • CMOCO only biopsy tissue samples.
  • Reprocessing of FFPI tissue samples for Electron Microscopy.
  • Paraffin Embedding of large format and biopsy tissue samples.
  • Microtomy sectioning of tissue samples.
  • Staining and cover slipping of tissue samples
  • Manual tracking of patient tissue samples.
  • Maintenance of supply inventory.
  • Cleaning and organization of workstations
  • Disposal of biological waste.
  • Changing solutions in tissue processors.
  • Adherence to all operational maintenance requirements.
