This position performs laboratory tests and procedures in histology, operates and maintains laboratory equipment, prepares specimens for analysis and diagnosis, and stains and mounts slides.

Requirements

  • An associate’s degree or higher in a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Histotechnician or Histotechnologist Certification (HTL, ASCP), or eligible for certification.

Responsibilities

  • Embedding of surgical specimens: chooses correct size of mold, arranges tissue in center of mold using the appropriate orientation dependent on tissue type (skin, tubular specimens, bone), embeds multiple pieces in same block arranging tissue in a parallel line to the longer axis of the mold, and places correct back onto the mold, fills in the any voided areas with paraffin & places mold immediately onto cold plate
  • Microtomy of surgical specimens: uses proper safety standards when handling the knife blade, faces block without loss of tissue, cuts sections at appropriate thickness, and cuts multiple sections in a smooth ribbon without holes, chatter or undulations
  • Tissue processing: knows basic operations and different programs, knows how to run a standard overnight program, knows how to change processing reagents and paraffin baths, and performs routine maintenance and daily cleaning
  • Special stains and immunohistochemistry: locates and maintains control slides for each stain ordered, uses proper equipment for each staining technique, follows correct protocol of stain ordered by pathologist, and follows proper storage requirements for all reagents
  • Frozen sections: fills out frozen section record sheet, stains sections correctly following the rapid H&E guidelines, and cleans cryostat after each frozen
  • Other duties as assigned
